How long are you going between shoeings this summer?

I moved mine from 7 weeks to six weeks over the summer. It is now 4 weeks since she was shod and I'm looking at her and thinking 'you'll never go another 2 weeks.' The clenches are starting to come up and I can see bits where the hoof is starting to break up. I am tempted to try and get her done next week but she doesn't grow much horn so I am worried it might weaken her feet even more if they have to put the nails in close to the previous nail holes. Then I am thinking, if I hold out for the full two weeks she might lose a shoe and wreck her foot anyway. I really don't know what to do :(
So I would be interested in hearing what other horse's feet are like this summer and how often you are getting yours shod.
 
Mine is the same as all year, 7-8 weeks, but I live in the NW and we don't really have much of a summer here :rolleyes:.
It is only in the last 10 days that our gateways have dried up :(.
 
Six weeks (usually seven maximum at other times of the year). She grows too much foot with all this grass about, and just goes lame (she has dodgy legs). She needs doing after five but stretches to six.
 
I've noticed my mare's feet have grown a lot quicker this past month. She can usually go 8 weeks between visits no problem but it'll be 6 this time. With all the rain we've had up here the grass has been really rich.
 
taz is going 6 weeks he ussually goes 5 weeks but his feet are not growing enough to have another set on he ussually has really crap feet but they are not too bad at the moment he will probably go between 7 and 8 weeks in the winter as his feet dont grow at all he just has to have new shoes because they wear out but i find running water over his feet after work is really helping him out :) good luck
 
Thanks for all your replies. I think the weather is partly to blame - we've gone from bone dry in April to soaking in May and June (mud as bad as in winter) then back to mainly dry and hot in July. Hope yours all keep theirs on until your farrier is due out!
 
It all depends on the individual horse. Why not just ask your farrier's advice? There is no cut & dried formula or timing...you need to go by what best suits your own horse.
 
Much to my bank balance's loss, every FOUR WEEKS, with horse I share (not my idea). And seems like they are shoeing him in Manolo Blahnicks given the price....
 
Mine is done 6 weeks without fail summer and winter, even when he was off work for a month and a half, I also grease his feet with Kevin Bacon every day :):)
 
Mine has to be done every 4 weeks,on vets advice,it keeps him sound as he's got arthritis and poor confirmation in the near fore.

He used to go 6 weeks when I first had him but he'd start tripping and stumbling by about week 5 -it really didn't do him any good.

I really don't think its worth penny pinching and trying to make them go longer than they really should when it comes to shoeing,it can cause so many problems. Hence my user name-ha ha,I see my farrier a lot!
 
Was on 7 week intervals as farrier felt it was best to get enough growth. Recently gone down to 6 weeks and farrier suggested using Kevin Bacons. Her hooves are now so much better from using the Kevin Bacons - that stuff is brilliant.
 
Usually 6 weeks, tho since early June have been going 4 or 5 weeks depending on shoes wear (yes, am riding more as lighter longer) and also foot growth which is quicker between end May till end Sept (usually).
Done 4 weeks ago, my big fuzzy is going to be done this coming week rather than waiting another 2 weeks. Farrier ok with it - would rather do them when they need doing than worrying if shoes not fitting properly :)

(tho I appreciate if someone is on a very tight budget, then its not going to happen)
 
My warmblood X goes 7 weeks but my New Forest goes 10 weeks, he is on restricted grazing, light work & the Farrier says he has the best hooves on his round.
 
Mine's not been shod long.

She went 10 weeks with no problems whatsoever.

This time she's had them on 4 weeks and I noticed the clenches looking a little high, that day she pulled one off!

Farrier's come out to put itback on and fix the clenches but wants her to wait until at least 8 weeks as she has special shoeing and they need the foot to grow more or something :s
