Just a quick question - how long would you suggest is the minimum length of time that a foal and mare should be seperated before being within calling range/sight again?

Our foal was 6mths old last weekend and the mare went off to a loan home. Neither mare or foal looked for each other or so much as whinnied - both just continued eating hay, the foal in their stable and the mare on the lorry! The loan home's circumstances have changed and I have to take the mare back so how long do you think I would have to leave them away from each other, esp given their complete ease of parting? They would be turned out 600m away from each other (but in calling range) and stabled within sight of each other..

Advice appreciated.

2 months? If I was doing it thats how long I would plan on. My little 'un has been weaned at night but is on same yard as mum so v difficult to find a field for mum to go away to!

i would say if you've got something that is really quite relaxed then 3 weeks, but a month usually is the normal period. we weaned ours for between 3 weeks and 5 weeks depending largly on circumstances of where we could put the mares and how long they were allowed to stay where they were. all have been fine with that duration. the mares always call to everyone and everyone answers them when they walk back onto the yard, but its not a specific thing between the mares and their foals, just a general 'hello, we're back!!' ..... hope that helps
