If a vet told you to give a horse bute before you rode it, how long before riding would you give the bute (for spavin formation)? For a friend. In other words, how long does bute take to work? Thanks.
I think you need to give a loading dose then reduce to a level that keeps the horse comfortable, (mine was 1/2 sachet a day) but vet should explain fully.
best really to discuss with the adminerstering vet. generally you load for a couple of days then reduce to a maintenance level depending on the problem. quantity will depend on the size and weight of horse, and the severity of the problem. TALK to the vet.....
if i am understanding you properly if i was gonna ride in the evening i would give the bute in the morning and if i was gonna ride in the morning i would give the bute the evening before. I dont actually know how long it takes to work but my reasoning is that most vets prescribe it once a day for maintenence so my reasoning is that it must last pretty near 24 hours but i have no idea how long it would take to start working. I would guess at maybe a couple of hours.
Thanks for the input guys, I think we were looking at the situation lornaA above says so I'll tell her to try that 1st - she's got a big box of bute and was told to feed it before exercise,
she thinks 1/2 sachet a day was right.
