Hi, I was pondering the other day just how long I 'lurked' on HHO before I became a member and what exactly it was that made me join, what I liked and didn't like about this forum etc

For some people it is just a random quiery, for others a simple hello and for some it is a the result of reading a post that they feel strongly about.

For me, I think (although can't quite remember) that it was a simple query, and I only lurked for a few days before joining. I like the random posts, the 'popcorn' sessions, I am a closet fan of some of the contraversial posts , I love the wide and varying advice and the variety of people on here who share a common love. I love that people will 'tell it how it is' but don't like the occcasional bullying that we see, I also dislike the fact that some people post helpful but 'abrupt' messages and get chastised for it.

Was just wondering what experiences other people had, why did you join, how long did you lurk, what do you like and dislike, what have you gained and learnt etc...

I lurked for about a month, and then I had a problem!!! even though I had read some horrid posts, I was desperate, so took the plunge.

Although I have read some pretty horrid and bitch posts, on the whole I have to say thanks to this forum for mostly sound advice.

I'd been lurking for about 4 weeks or so before I joined. I didn't join specifically for a certain thread, I just thought it was about time I joined up, everyone seemed really friendly and thought it would be a good place to get my knowledge all back up to date before I take the plunge to get my own horse.

I was lurking on some of the other horse forums but I liked this one the best from a combination of the posters, the quality of the posts and the layout of the forum.

I lurked for a few months before i actually joined and posted. I don't post very often, its took me 3 years to post 900 times!! I like reading controversial threads but rarely add to them. Usually go n NL, AAD and Soapbox

3 years

how come you found it scary?

Because I will discuss; I will argue :D but I hate and deplore bitchiness and personal insults.. it isn't necessary.

I seem to think I only started posting to defend one of the kids who was under attack. Now I can't stop.

you should be called knight in shining armour lot lady in red :D:D:D fair play to you :)

I joined because I bought the Unicorn advertised in H@H on April 1st. I just needed to brag about the fact. I just thought that it was important to let everyone know that I had made the brave decision to purchase such an unknown quantity. He is fine by the way, he can jump the moon.

I lurked for a couple of months, then joined up and started posting.
I like the variety of posters-some are a bit green and some come across as experts. Its the combination of ages, sexes and content that I like the most-but i suppose horses have that effect?:)
I certainly dont like the tone of some of the posters if they dont agree with a thread or an individual poster but then if something looks too "hot" id stay clear,if im having an argument or heated discussion i want to be face to face with a person!
Im very nosey and love looking at the pictures people put up, im totally biased and think my neddies are the worlds most gorgeous animals:) but I like to see other peoples neddies and see how happy they are with their horses?
Having worked for a welfare organisation for years and trained as vet nurse I do probably get riled by some of the welfare issues that come up and have to tie my fingers up so i dont start typing before i think things through! but then the vet threads are good for me also to keep up with new things and other points of view!:)

I've been lurking for about 6 months although I did join and make my first post when someone asked what Fjord's were like (I just couldn't resist it because we have one and she's the love of my life!).
I've been scared because I'm not sure if I'm welcome, horses are my life and I've owned them for many years but I'm anti hunting.

I lurked for a couple of hours then joined :D I couldnt sleep so stayed on here all night until i had to leave for work at 7am lol i was a tad tired after tacking up 20 odd horses!!!

Nymphea- been anti hunting doesnt mean your going to get thrown off the forum! :D I think if you were anti and out to cause bother that would offend people? and it certainly shouldnt mean your not welcome! where would we get debate and discussions from if we all thought the same thing? :)
thats the beauty of the forum its open to all ages with differing views on horsey and dog stuff :)

Haha, I like this post. I lurked on and off for about a month and then I got polo pony and I was like - right thats it i need some advice, i'm going to bloody join. LOL
I am rather strange on here though - i make the odd thread or post, but i prefer to read your posts and hear your opinions and find out useful info - I have strong views, but I don't like to be argumentative/controversial :p:)

I lurked for a couple of months before joining. I'm still more of a lurker really - I only feel confident about replying to things I have personal experience of and I rarely start posts of my own. I've learned a lot of interesting things from reading posts though although I will agree it has changed a lot over the years. Probably a lot to do with the massive increase in numbers!
