I have an Andalucain x DWB rising 6 and was wondering if the andalucian side is similar to that of IDs maturing later than other breeds? He's about 16hh now but both parents were larger, any ideas?
we have an Andalusian x TB and yes, apparently (we looked up on andalusian website) they are slow to mature and I think they reach maturity around about 7 years or so? Apparently they also have a slightly slower heart rate than oher breeds (not sure of the truth behind that though). We bought ours as 16.1 at 4 yo and actually haven't measured him since but he appears a bit taller and has certainly beefed out a lot and looks like may still expand - he's 8 in May.
They are late maturing and can continue to grow until they are about 6, it is more though that they muscle up with riding etc, I know Sirena grew another inch after backing at 4. She is 10 this year and looks taller than last year but it is simply that she is sitting more behind now which gives the illusion of her being taller.
It's also true about the heartbeats, S scares any new vet with the slowness of her heart!
