Hiya, just a quickie...does anyone have any idea how long the effects 1 sachet of bute might have on a 14.3 Welsh D? Bentley is on a sachet morning and night for a slight mystery lameness in his near fore and when I took him out (before his evening dose) earlier he seemed much better. It had been 8 hours since his morning dose so I wondered if he might be improving or the bute was still working? Thanks

My horse is allergic to bute and when shes had it, shes has the runs really badly for a good 48 hours afterwards suggesting it takes that long for one sachet to leave the system completely but i think your usually supposed to do 1 sachet twice a day as a standard practice so i think it must help them for about 12 hours??? But that is only a guess!!

As above but two other points. . .

NSAIDs (of which bute is one) are "cumulative" so if he's been on it regularly for a couple of days he will appear "sounder" than if you'd just given him a single dose and the effect will be more "levelled out" so will last longer. The point of a regular dose is to keep as steady as possible a level in the bloodstream.

Also, it's an anti-inflammatory not just a pain medication. Since the inflammatory process contributes to pain bute will lessen this effect even if the underlying issue is unchanged. So there is some residual effect, even after the level of bute drops, at least until use aggravates the inflammation again.

Thanks guys...guess I got a bit carried away! We will finish the course and then reassess once the bute is out of his system. Its just so nice having the old Bentley back...I have a niggling feeling that this is going to need a bit more investigation. He was slightly lame on his near fore on a circle, failed a flexion test abysmally on that leg but was ok in a straight line. No heat or swelling...so a bit of a mystery.
