Hi there

just wondering what others experiences are of their mares. How long do they usually wax up for before foaling? Our mare is an old hand but this is our first foal from her and she has been waxed up now for 2 days...... she looked very uncomfortable last night.. but no foal...... she is not supposed to be due until the beginning of July...

Our foalie was supposed to wait until the beginning of July but she is already here.

Mum waxed up for a couple of days this time, but last foal she waxed up during the day and foaled that night, so I guess as they say all mares are variable.

But with her being restless like you say I would very much think you may not have too long to wait.

But saying that some do like to fool you and make you wait a while after waxing.
Best of luck.

if she foaled now she'd only be a week early, which is pretty normal i think. i wouldn't leave her unsupervised from now on, tbh... is she running milk? have her tail-head muscles gone slack? has the bump moved right back and started bulging more to one side?

Hi

yes muscles have def slackened, she is not running milk but bump i noticed this afternoon has moved more to one side... and seems to have dropped even more.. (she is huge...)

heya, ive foaled 27 mares this year i would say your mare sounds reasonibly close though every mare can be different. all the signs minime mentioned are good pointers for you to look for and should help you. a week early would be nothing too unusual, also the wax can often be clear or very slighty white at first waxing up but will get yellowier nearer to foaling!
good luck and happy foaling!

i've been told that they lose appetite too when foaling is imminent is this right?

Some do - some start eating for England as when the foal starts to shift backwards, it takes pressure off the stomach and they don't feel full! Same with waxing - some will wax 3 weeks before - some don't show wax at all. Some will run milk a couple of days/or hours before foaling - I had one this week that started running milk 12 hours AFTER foaling.

The fact is that mares don't read the textbooks - they do what they want, when they want. All the 'signs' are little reminders to you that she's getting close - but they're not definitive! The only way to be SURE your mare is about to foal is seeing her in labour and the waters break!
