I worked yards for many years and often only took 10mins per box, unless super dirty then 15mins had a large wheel barrow so could fit 2 or 3 stables in then legged it the muck trailer and ran it up the ramp (had to literally run to get enough momentum up the ramp).

If having to do water and empty barrow after each box I'd probably average 15mins, some would take less so.e a bit more.

My first yard I used to muck out any number from 16-24 the sweep/do haynets/lunch/skip out/top up waters/hang nets and feed.

Next yard mucked out any number from 8 - 12 then exercise 3 or 4 lots plus nets etc.

Last yard mucked out 6 and exercised 3 lots - ride and lead. Plus all other yard jobs and clipping mane tidying etc.

All were large full straw beds and fully mucked out daily including under banks.

It is all relative though and harder to muck out with horses in boxes plus how far apart everything is.
All horses had bedding as and when needed we/I didn't have set days

24 full muck outs is too many for one person in one day.
I agree, way to much, and they need to get other staff to help you. I do about 20 mins - 25 mins per stable that is muck out aubiose picking up pellets but not digging banks out, pee with snow shovel in the centre area, put in evening feed and take bucket back to feed room and make it up for next day and fill haynet for the night, and empty wheelbarrow muck hill about well never timed it but at a guess two minutes passed indoor school, throw up onto pile and level it out picking up droppings rolling down.

In my opinion that is not really possible if the horses are still in their boxes. Maybe at a pinch if you are strong and the set up was perfect (horses out, muck heap nearby), but seriously there are easier ways to earn a living! The strong young men who work at our stable do between 12 and 15 each, all horses are out unless there is the occasional one on box rest, and they have a tractor / trailer to throw the dirty bedding into. I would personally look for another job. When you are in work where you are constantly being told that you are not good enough it is easy to stop valuing yourself. It sounds as if you are a consiencious person who is committed and wants to do your best - there are plenty of employers out there who would pay and treat you well.

Our boxes you would say are easily done. Rubber matting, enough shavings to be comfy and have a bank but not knee deep, snow shovel and broom. Sweep back, scoop out, reset banking into floor, add more shavings if needed, empty wheelbarrow - 5-6mins tops for us. BUT we aren't pernickety about every clean shavings staying in the box. Our muck trailer is a 20second walk away and we don't do hay or water.

24 is easily done in a day under the right circumstances. Plus when you build up a resistance to the work it gets much easier.
Things may have changed, but my understanding is that race horses have a lot less hay, than the average horse, but more concentrate , therefore the stables will be quicker to muck out as there's less poo. Is that still the case?

Can the boss do it that fast?

We have 12-15 stables to do , inc turnout bedding haylage and it takes from 9-12 with 2 people. Our horses are very dirty though (some 4-5 wheelbarrow fulls out a day) and a few stables have small leaks 🙈

24 is too many for one person.

Nope. A lot more trainers are seeing the value in forage. Our horses get a good amount of haylage 4x a day as well as daily turnout.

Als said before, if you’re boss isn’t complaining, don’t worry about it.
He complained today. Funny enough he was only here for half the day and I got things done a bit more better. Work rider said he was proud I got all done by 1:50pm. I didn't have to worry about waters but I did because when I got to the next 12 majority didn't have any water in 🤦‍♀️ and some were from first lot and been without for hours! I should have a helper soon, I believe they start Tuesday. 12 stables between is much more manageable.. but it's not every single day but better than doing 6-5 days alone!

I do a lot of boxes on occasion
I can start at 8 and have 12 done for 9.30. Then I take a break and start again 10 to 11.30. We actually have usually about 34 in, so I am finished about 12.30. Sweep as I go with final sweep and tidy at the end maybe 10 mins. They all have auto drinkers and have been hayed beforehand, muck heap fairly handy, I get 4-5 boxes to one big barrow. We lift wet but don't chuck all up and filter the tiny poos etc. new bedding is done on days when we have plenty of hands so not the days I'd be doing all those.

Oh my god 12 in that much time. I really do need a big wheelbarrow, I think thatll save me alot of time. It is tedious when i got to move the wheelbarrow, remove all tools, close the door and kick bolt and dump the muck at the end and then repeat

12 in that time though, I think my boss would like that and so do I. I'd be very quick and able to pick up the fun jobs after 😂🙈

Fingers crossed for you that your helper turns up!!
In all seriousness all the yards I've worked at have expected 20 mins per box inc hay & water. I expect that now of anyone I have work at my yard. There is also no way I would expect someone to work for 6hrs with no break.
I hope you get into racing school but if not you need to look for a job where you are not mucking out so many. Eventually you'll be exhausted and will walk away from an equine career which sounds like a loss as you seem very dedicated.

Ours get loads of hay but that's only for em to make it from 1pm till evening when they get turned out. I think these fellas get more than the average horse 🙈

Yeah, I'm hoping this helper comes around my social skills are terrible 😂. I have found I am averaging 20 mins, I decided to time myself. Longest was 25 mins (boxrested), shortest was 10 mins - no horse in that one! And average of 20-15 mins on each

Thank you so much, I am definitely hoping to get to racing school it's going to open lots of opportunities

We also have sliding stable doors which doesn't sound like it would make much of a diff but it does!
I think our barrows are 250L / 300L. There is no slope to the muck heap which I know I couldn't manage with a full barrow.
I defo go faster and feel fresher after a half hour break so I think its a false economy not to take one, I'd just get slower and slower without a coffee and a bit of toast lol

Do they use haynets for their hay, and if so, how do you fill them? It is a time-consuming job, and there are ways to make it easier and quicker.

I can't believe what I've just read. Sounds like slave labour to me and the comment about not expecting anyone to work 6 hours without a break amazes me. I don't think it is legal for an employee to work 6hours without a break! Happy to be corrected.

I didn't realise it was legal 🙁
