How long do you normally stay out? (1 horse people)

Just wondering what people normally do.

Think I'm a bit lame as I'm normally quite happy to pootle home after 2/3 hours, especially if we've done plenty! Rockwood never really did 2nd horses and I know the country like the back of my hand but now have no idea where I am, so seem to be packing in at 2nd horses...

What about you guys?
 
Must admit i'm about the same, 2-3 hours, sometimes slightly over, but that is about all my horse is fit enough for at the moment! As soon as he starts to get strong, i know its time to pack up!

Again, i'm never too upset as usually we've done a fair bit of jumping etc by then anyway!

I don't have 2nd horses!
 
I only did just over an hour today, but horse is not fit due to a very slack summer so I was a bit paranoid. I find it hard to keep a horse super fit when you do it all yourself. Like you I am usually home after 2 hours ish if a fast day/lots of jumping, 3 hours or so if slower. When he tires he leans and my brakes go, so I know it's time to leave before we do ourselves/someone else a mischief!
 
High Peak not done 2nd horses since I was a teenager (and that was a long, long time ago!!:eek:) these days with trail laying a couple of hours is enough esp on a 19yo who thinks she is 5... (but we do jump a lot in this time!!)
 
Thanks pip, this Fox hunting (within the law of course!) is a bit different to our harriers. Even some kids have 2nd ponies!!! what's that all about???

You should come have a day with us too - will see if I can get u a bargain! ;)
 
We are harriers and don't have second horses. Was out 2 1/2 hours on Weds on old boy. It was a bit quick so thought I'd better take him back. Out all day today on t'other one but kept steady at back as he has just recovered from virus and is not match fit yet.
 
kids with 2nd ponies??? whats that all about! any way count me in, would love to come for a day and who knows (if i can somehow bribe OH to miss his rugby:confused: for the day) might even be able to bring 2nd horse..:) by that I mean just broken in 5yo, so maybe not til next season!!!
 
Well the aim is as long as possible! Which is why I get a little upset at going on unnecessary jollies, because I don't know the country well enough yet to know where to stand still/nip round to be in the right place. I want to save my one horse so that I can do about one 4-5 hour day once a week max. It may not be feasible though because of the heavy land and big hedges. Most people seem to stay out until 2 at the latest, or have second horses. The pack I hunted with previously, hardly anyone had second horses and a lot stayed out all day.

My lot are fit after spending a season doing endurance.

As kids we use to spend as long as our parents stayed out and then when we went out on our own we would stay out until the hounds went home.

We also use to hack to and from the meets so Horses / ponies were fit.
 
Usually try to get cob in the trailer by 3pm! Although last saturday we were still out at 3.30pm, was a nice day, cob not tired & the clocks hadn't changed yet!!! All depends on the weather & what we have done!!!

Quite..all day ,and maybe a six mile hack to the meet..and pray things went in a home direction.
 
I will stay out all day (pay to much in subs to only stay a couple hours) plus my 17 year old cob doesn't tire, maybe in different country it would be a different story. Will be going 3 out of 4 days over a 2 weekperiod up til xmas this season so if we have any hard days (fairly unlikely) we will be going home early
 
Used to stay out all day with my little cob. And I mean all day, eg until the light went and the hounds had to come home! That wa sin derbyshire, so proper hedge country. He was a tough little thing though, so wasn't a problem. With G and if I took L out, I would do a couple of hours and leave it at that :) I would rather get home before they get tired and silly, and also like them to go out for an hour or so when I get home to unwind :)
 
Oshk I was always happy whilst he has happy, knew Rockwood country and did quite a few dark finishes.
Now it depends whether OH has second horse, whether I am lucky enough to have one, where we are and what we're doing. Often if I know I've got grey boy all day and we're boxed, I stay on as long as possible, because even if I give up and go back to the box I can't go home until the days done as OH is whipping in.
 
Depends really on the weather etc!! Went home at 3 today because I was soaked to the skin. Will normally stay out till about 4ish if having a good day and dark if a really good day. Only have one horse but know the country very well so try and conserve him and not go sky larking just for the sake of it.
 
Have just stayed out all day 2day, stayed a back and fairly slow at beginging then as more people went was more up the front and jumping etc, didn't have too many gallops 2 day tho . But I just play it my ear about how they are goin how the horses feel etc, would rather stay out as longer as I can perhaps jump a few less fences than only stay out a while and jump lots, I tend to find that it at the end you see more more off the hounds etc!
 
4 o'clock today. but it was a VERY slow day. the irony is when it is boring as anything you'd be happy to go home at 2, but have a fresh horse, so you have to stay in case anything exciting happens! unfortunately nothing did.

it was my first day out this season though! I won't be able to walk tomorrow!
 
I tend to head home around 2/2.30pm - I run a small livery yard so need to get back before dark to get clients horses in, and as have only 1 horse to hunt, find that he can easily do 2 days a week if I don't stay out all day. I can also turn out my chap for half and hour before coming in for tea so he can have a stretch and roll.
