How long does it take you to make up your mind after trying a horse?!

Just curious!! Just had someone come and try out my five year old and they got on really well with him and really liked him but are going home to talk to husband about it.

Just wondered how long it takes all of you to decide once you've tried a horse out!!

Generally there and then.

Only once have I gone home and done a bit more research and that was because I wasn't familiar with the breed and wanted to look up some more info.

I always take cash and quite often, if it is a long way, the trailer, I do tell people that I will be bringing the trailer. When I want a horse I want it then! I don't have anything vetted so no delay is necessary as far as I am concerned.

I don't get that people are reluctant for the horse to go straight away, they want it sold, if they accept money then they are happy with the deal, why do they need time (days) to say Goodbye?

As a seller I love people that decide immediately, I'm not scared to say No if I don't like them, or don't think they'll suit, but give me someone who will give me a deposit rather than someone who faffs about anyday. I don't hold horses for faffers, if I haven't got a deposit in my grubby paws then the horse is still on the market, if someone else comes along then bad luck.

I know almost staight away, if I'm undecided then it's not the right one!

However, even if I know it's the one right away, I still go and have a chat in private with whoever has acompanied me at the viewing before I make an offer.

I looked at two recently that I didn't buy. One I knew straight away was not for me, the seller had not been entirely honest. The other I really liked but was just a touch too small, confirmed when I looked at the pics of me on him after we left. I suspect I was branded a time waster there!

The last I looked at I knew was the right one before I even got there, as with two other horses I bought in the past.

Straight away, I always say that if you have to "think" whether you like it or not then you obviously don't. Me and OH always drive home, talk usually about how much to offer, then I ring up and get it sorted.

I knew by the time I got off him, but as I wasn't buying (I was 16 so daddy was paying :D) so we "went home to talk about it".

I have a tendency to rush into things so I always have to force myself to have time to think. Also I think it depends on how different the new horse is to the current horse (I went from an old 14 hand warmblood, to a 8 year old 16 hand TB) as if the jump is big then you need to consider if you can cope with such a change.

Also I wanted one horse but she was far too good for me (SJ champ, where as i'm a happy hacker), so if aloud to decide there and then, I would have had her, but after a few hours sensible thinking I knew she would have been wasted and best not to have her :(

I've just spoken to lad who's got horse on livery and said the lady got on with him brilliantly and really liked him. She's taken video home to show her husband and is ringing back tomorrow.

Guess that means she won't buy him surprise surprise!! Oh b*gger.

Maybe she had another horse to look at ? I think these days people are scared to say to your face - I don't like it. I saw a horse last week and it was not my cup of tea. I did not ride it. I simply said "thanks for showing him to me, he is not what I am looking for". She then started to cross question me about why I didn't like him. It was a difficult situation because she had not told the truth about him on the phone and I really didn't want to get into a scene about it.

She'd already been to see a horse today that she didn't like.

Guess there is nothing I can do but wait to hear tomorrow. There is another lady coming to try him on Saturday so we might have more luck with her!!

I always sleep on it whther my mind is made up right there and then or not, very often have changed my mind when had more time to digest and mull it over

I made my mind up about my girl literally as soon as i was in the saddle!! I still told them i would go home and have a think about it. They said, when i phoned back the following evening, that they knew i really really liked her anyway and had a feeling i would go ahead and get her!!

With my present mare, I knew before I even got on her. I'd brought a fistful of cash because I knew from her advert that if she was as advertised, I wanted her.

The horse I'd looked at previously, I really liked but he was a bit small. I told the seller I was going to think about it because I had to decide if I wanted to compromise on the size. I called her the following day and let her down.

I also looked at a very nice gelding years ago that I had to think about because I had another gelding who'd been a crypt and didn't get on with most geldings (we'd been looking for a mare but this boy really stood out). My family and I discussed whether or not we'd be able to keep them peacefully and finally decided to try. As it turned out, we were able to introduce them slowly and they became good friends.

So there can be lots of reasons to have to think on it. Some people aren't comfortable with making an on-the-spot decision.

I've only bought the one but I knew as soon as i saw her head over the stable door that she was the one for me. I tried her out as I had with all the others and said I needed to think it over, but....got 2 mins down the road and phoned to say I wanted her. Went back straight away and put a deposit down.

I nearly bought a horse previously but it took three visits to make up my mind whether she was the right one - so don't be disheartened - that one failed the vetting tho.

Pretty much straight away, I liked him a lot when I rode him but thought he would be far too expensive (from a very good sj dealer). When I found out that he was easily affordable (about 1/2 what I was expecting!) had a chat to my dad (who was paying) and put down a deposit subject to vetting. There was no hard sell at all from the dealer but I was sure!!
