How long for abscess hole to heal?

2 weeks ago Casp had an abscess dug out. The hole was about 1/4 of an inch deep.

I hot poulticed for a couple of days to make sure everything was clear, and have been dry poulticing since then.

He has been turned out in the Round Pen to avoid the mud - I don't want anything getting into the hole and causing a new abscess!

But how long will it take for the hole to heal? My brand new and expensive surface is getting trashed with the amount of poo, he had done 16!!! in 4 hours yesterday! And obviously he would rather be out with the others. (Most of the poos were of the small but sloppy "I'm stressed without my friends!" type)

Any ideas would be great

I would make sure it really has stopped draining, then wash out with iodine or hydrogen peroxide and put in a plug of cotton wool, cover and turn out in the field, taking care to check each day when he comes in then plug again until it has started to grow back, it usually grows fairly well within a week or two.
