How long for abscess to heal?

Blue went to Bell Equine 2 weeks ago tomorrow and they dug a hole in his foot for the gunk to drain through, and said keep him in and poultice for 6 days, which we did... then kept him in a couple more and he looked to be ok so put him out and he went lame again.

Picked his feet out and there was still grey gunk coming out the hole so he's back in again now!

Why is it still coming out?!

So many abcesses at the moment! It depends if the abcess has underun the sole how long it will take. Our big Ginger lad has just got over one. We hot wet poulticed for about 10 days in all (cut the animalintex to a small rectangle jsut bigger than the hole so the whole bottom of the foot wasn't being softened up with it). Once the pus had stopped coming we put sugar (icing sugar) and iodine paste on, with a cotton wool swab and gamgee pad over the top, vet-wrapped it on then gaffer taped over the top. Did this for about another week. This was to harden the sole back up. When we eventually turned him back out (poor sod was in for nearly a month) we carried on with the sugardine and cottonwool swab (farrier had to make the shoe so we could reach the abcess-affected area) but put Keratex hoof putty over the top and around the sides to stop anything getting back in. He's fine now thank God. Bloody marathon though!

I would think it probably has underrun the sole to be honest. He's been in for 2 weeks now and he hates being in so keeps escaping!

So could be another week of being in with poultice on ?

Farrier is coming at 4pm he was supposed to be putting his shoe back on but not sure that will happen now.
