Blue went to Bell Equine 2 weeks ago tomorrow and they dug a hole in his foot for the gunk to drain through, and said keep him in and poultice for 6 days, which we did... then kept him in a couple more and he looked to be ok so put him out and he went lame again.

Picked his feet out and there was still grey gunk coming out the hole so he's back in again now!

Why is it still coming out?!

Was washing it out with iodine solution every time the poultice was replaced.

Did not put anything in it to turn him out though?

Hi,

My pony had abcess and vet cut big hole in his foot! I hot poulticed it until i was sure there was no more gunk, then dry poulticed for a few days to harden the foot a bit, then soaked some cotton wool iodine and stuffed it into the whole for about a week.

Aries had an abscess. Vet said to dry poultice it for 4-5 days, which we did. On day 4/5, we put her out in the paddock with her foot bandaged (animex and vetrap), which sheloved and was sound as a pound. A couple of days later the shoe went back on and she was fine. I guess it varies between horses, but we kept the hole covere until it was pretty much sealed over.

Ok so it may be a new infection picked up on turnout or more likely its the original one being pushed out by the extra exercise and movement of being in the field. They can take ages to clear up Im afraid and I have always plugged the hole and then put a boot on for the first few weeks of turnout to give the hoof time to start laying down a bit of growth.

Fingers crossed for yours.
