How long for damaged mouth (from bit) to heal

My mare had this a few weeks ago - actually I would never have known if it wasn't for the dentist finding it! Anyway, found on the Monday - did not ride the following weekend, just lunged off a cavesson - fine in time for the following weekend - changed bits!
 
Mouths heal incredibly quickly compared to elsewhere in the body, so it shouldn't be too long :) Not sure exactly how long though, not experienced this before :p

depends on what sort of damage you mean. Paddy has had the bit pinching the corner of his mouth and that was grand the next day with a different bit. he has also had an abcess on the side of his mouth and that took longer first it swelled then burst so about 2 weeks from start to finish :D

The best thing is alum solution. You need to get some alum powder / salts, dissolve in water and then soak some gauze in it. You can either dab it on or wrap the gauze round the corner of a snaffle and get Horse to wear it on a bridle for a few mins. This heals it very quickly (a couple of days).
 
Put vaseline on corners of the mouth before you ride and manuka honey on straight after and again several times through the day if you can. Twice a day is better than nothing. Mouths heal very quickly even if you carry on riding them.
 
i got a rescue horse who had been badly treated and had a shocking mouth. took two weeks to heal totally. only thing was he anticipated pain whenever a contact was taken up, so that took longer to cure!

When I got my first pony he was weeping and sore in the corners of his mouth, I religeously used sudocrem on it, I can't remember how long it took to heal, but I really did the job and once healed I never had a problem again. Could have had something to do with the fact that the previous owner used a drop and a kimblewick on him and I used a snaffle. (just talking about my horse, not reflection on what may have hurt your neddies mouth)

I reccomend sudocrem and always use it on my horses but i know that my friend has found her 2 arabs (unrelated) are sensitive to it. Never been anything other than a godsend to me though :D
 
GM can get a sore mouth (outside, by the lips), when she's being a bit special (arguing with herself :rolleyes:). Usually give the next day off. If bad, we use a baby nappy rash cream... begins with a P...
 
ok im getting very stressed about my horses mouth it keeps splitting in the corners ! people have been so kind and given tonnes of advice but not sure which adcvice to take ! prep h,vaseline,sudo crem, gold label skin hardening cream, white spirit, latec bandage, aluminum crystals............where do i start ? :o
 
I find Alum salts and Prep H the best. Dol has pink on her inner lips & corners and every now and then gets a wee crack and Alum salts plus prep H few times a day clears in up in bout 2 days. We can never figure out what causes crack...she came in from field after 3 days off with one despite not wearing a bit?!?
 
Vaslene def the best, just slap it on, it will protect from rubs and add a bit of moisture to dry cracked corners. If it worries you about sending them out in the sun with it on then you can just wipe it off before turning out. If it keeps happening then I would look at your bit choice?
 
I've used Bonjela in the past quite sucessfully, I've been told that Preperation H is about the best stuff but I just couldn't bring myself to go into the chemist and explain how I needed it for my horse - honest! It was bad enough when I went ion for Benzyl Benzoate, the woman behind the counter kept telling me how it was a scabies treatment in humans......
 
My daughters pony often gets a small cut in one corner of his mouth. I put vaseline dipped in salt on it twice a day & its healed enough to ride after a day off xxx
 
Red had this a while ago because the bit didn't fit properly so it had rubbed a bit in his mouth raw. We just washed it in salt water a few times a day and used sudocrem in corners of the mouth - it was healed in about a week.
