all investigation has pointed towards a kick on the hindquarters, rest prescribed but how long do you think it will be before he becomes sound? No skeletal damage.

Rather impatient, pathetic worried mother (at least i admit it)

Ah hun, not a pathetic worried mother, just a CARING worried mother. I think your horse will let you know when he's feeling comfortable again. I'd just watch him, see if he seems depressed (that can often mean a horse is in pain), if he's allowed out, watch how he walks and if he joins in with hoolies in the field. I suppose a useful way to think about it is to ask yourself, if YOU got whacked in the thigh by some nutter wielding a hammer (that should be about the same impact) how long do you think you'd need for you to get over the shock, need cuddles/hot choccy/tlc for a few days, the bruising to come out, and then to start gently exercising again. Is he a baby over inuries? Some are, some aren't. Is he older or younger? That can affect healing times too. I'd give him a good week then maybe take him for a gentle walk in hand and see how he is. Then move it on from there. I guess a good 3 weeks depending on the severity of the kick x

thanks for putting it in perspective, its been 3 now and he looks fine enough in the field, walking too and from it and walking in hand/ loosley on the lunge and a little walk around the lanes but is still lame in trot and canter. I was just wondering what everyone else thought. He is much more himself now being a cheeky little monkey and happily demonstrating his flexibility with carrots/ apples!

He is 13 going on 14 so guess it could take him longer, i havent had him long so not too sure what he is like with an injury

x

Ah bless him. I'd just keep him mobile and working but just in walk for a bit if that's what he's happy with. If finances allow, you could treat him to a gorgeous deep massage to stretch his bruised muscles and let him feel warm and loved and happy. If there's any £££ left over, go and buy yourself a bottle of Jacob's Creek too xxx
