I've been at my yard for 17 years. Didn't think it was that long until I look at it in this way......I went there about a month after my 13 birthday and I turned 30 last month!!! Blimey now I feel old
I guess you are trying to gauge how long (on average) people stay at livery stables. My liveries tend to stay forever unless they sell their horse. I've found that people don't move around as often as one might think, certainly not in my part of Hampshire.
It was a little bit of a concern when I moved here as it did appear that people moved around a heck of a lot more than back in England, however I haven't seen this happen. Most of my boarders have been here since our first year of opening and all the new ones appear to be very happy with their horses living here. We are one of the biggest boarding stables in my rural area so I don't know whether that has something to do with it - I doubt it to be honest as there are tonnes of other places that they could go to if they wanted.
I think the secret is not to get too involved in what people get up to. You have to allow them privacy and leave them to spend time with their horses alone, whilst still remaining in the background if they want to talk or discuss anything.
Looking at the photos of your place, I think you will be very successful in grabbing your share of the market and from what I know of you (you laid back person like me
) I think people will stay at your yard for long periods of time.
I've been at current yard for 2 and a half yrs, because I love it there.
When my horse first arrived, I had him at a yard for just 2 weeks because the fencing was totally inadequate for him and he was jumping out of his field and into whichever other one he fancied!!!!!!!!
3 days is my shortest time anywhere....Heidi was 34 then and all they talked about was how she should be PTS as I shouldn't keep a useless horse.....then would all send their kids into the paddock with her whilst they got on with their gossiping.....the crunch came on the third day when she was choking as she'd been fed wine gums or something, and only having a few teeth meant she struggled to chew them....
I went off on one at them saying their kids shouldn't be in the paddock with her etc and was told she'd 'may as well be used for the kids to mess about with as she was worth f*** all for anything else'
ive been at my yard coming up 30 years but its where i was born and bred as we own it !!!
but our liveries stay for a long time our longest standing livery atm has been here 16 years, the longest one ever was here for 30 years !!!!
I am laid back and I'm certainly not a nosey person who will interfere (don't think I am anyway). I've always had the view that every one has their own ways and there isn't a right one.
Been at my current yard for over 14 years and its just me and my two boys, bliss ...... as long as you dont leave one at home (but I will not mention names as I do not want to give him a complex!) but its the TB in my siggie!
Got me thinking though as I was at a yard for 1 month with my old boy (but he was young then (did I see a tear!)). Problem was that if I went out on a hack one way I chanced across the A24 after 100 yards and if I went the other way it was the Railway line crossing to London!! What was I thinking of! But as always my old boy took it in his stride
.... but then remembered that I moved my old boy to a private house for 1 day only ..... then found that it overlooked a Stud and I did not want him looking at the mares being covered day in and day out! Again what was I thinking about!
