My horse became really itchy before Xmas, on his body. Tried a few things to no avail then got the vet who said most likely mites of some description and gave me a lime dip thing and some deosect. Enough for 4 x applications.
I have done one lot so far, used another to spray his rugs and stable etc. Need to leave it at least 2 weeks between applications. He seemed less itchy for a while although I’ve noticed he has started to itch again. Due his second application anyway so will do that but is this going to be an ongoing thing? How long till this is actually sorted?? Do they just keep coming back?!

I find it you manage mites not eradicate them sadly.

Yes that’s what I was beginning to wonder!
Why do some horses get them and not others? We all use the same straw at the yard, my horse is fit , healthy (vet ran some bloods when he was there), in work, not hairy, not old or unwell? Why does he have them and others don’t???

I think some are just more sensitive to them than others - like with sweet itch. But once you have them you are pretty much stuck with them. There is a 6 monthly injection you can use - I think it is called dectomax? I've managed to avoid mites so far (or if we have the horses are not reactive) but 2 yard mates have horses who itch from mites. They don't seem to be able to do more than control it.
