I pulled my horses mane a few days ago and because it was so thick, by the time I had finished, it was a little on the short side!

How long is your horse's mane?

Do you plait for competitions of leave it natural?

It'll grow back quite quickly. My Horse would have a very long mane but friend at yard gets frustrated and pulls it for me (boost!!). I can't even sort getting my own hair cut let alone my Horse!! I always cringe at how short it as at first, but it soon grows back.

I never plait but I only compete in SJ so no need to really.

My old horse doesnt have much of a mane. My cob is hogged. My welsh's mane is just past the top of his leg (about 30 to 32inches), and my youngsters mane is about 12inches

Hunter is hogged, the thoroughbred's is 2-3 inches and my old pony's is about a foot these days. I plait the tb if we go anywhere.

Try to keep them around 4 " but one has a thin mane which gets thinner if I pull it too much and the other's stands up like a gollywog's (for those of you who can remember gollywogs) if it gets that short.

Daisy's is left completely alone, it seems to have stopped growing any longer at about the bottom of her neckline. Keeps her toasty in winter but is a right pain when cantering or jumping because it flaps round your hands. I threaten to hog it but she looks so pretty I gues it'll stay

Maiden's mane was always about 3" long - any shorter and it stood up permanently, any longer and I couldn't plait it (not that I can plait to save my life anyway!)
It's now about 18" and she looks like a tramp, I can't wait to bring her back into work and trim her up in the spring! I get my mum to solocomb her though, I was let loose with a solocomb once and the result was about an inch of mane in some places, about 2 in others

My T.B's mane is about 2 inches, my arab's is about 2 foot, my Sec D's is also about 2 foot and my foalie's is a scrunchie bush!!!!

The welsh B's- Hogged!
The welsh C- about 5 inches and thin
The shetties- about 1 and a half foot
The welsh A's about a foot and thick

All the above are left natual.

The crossbred pony- anout 3 inches and very thick- Plaited for shows.

Cob's is nowed hogged, it pulled it too short and it looked awful, still not sure if I like it higged or not TBH.
NF's are long, Bramble's about 2 foot.
WB's about 6 inches, it's just the right thickness aswell, so easy to maintain.

Natives are left natural, WB's plaited if dressaging.

My TB's is about 4ins but I'll be pulling it soon just to tidy it up 'cos it's all over the place. I'm rubbish with manes but I have an excuse at the mo 'cos I've only had him 3weeks.

My old mare (also TB) always had a v.short mane which was only ever plaited for the odd dressage test (we mainly showjumped).

My greys mane is trimmed (he hates having it pulled and makes me feel terribly guilty!) so I use one of those Smart Tails thinning combs and a Solo Comb. He still has a natually thick mane though (Lusitano side I guess) and it never lies properly! During the winter, his mane is a little longer than during the summer (when it has to be plaited).

My other 2 don't have much done to theirs, just a little trim nown and again as both are natives. I got so peeved with my shetlands mane that I actually hogged her last month!! She looks awful

reds is kept short (5'')- its plaited for hunting/competing. it lays on the wrong side too, but i quite like that- its a bit quirky!
solos is a bit too long at the mo- i only pull it in summer when we are doing some showing. its about 8'' long at the mo. in summer its about 4''.

about 4 inches I think, I'm a little OCD when it comes to mane pulling! Only plait for showing, so that would be about twice a year

too long, and I'm cr_p at pulling manes, but think they look rubbish done any other way.

Ron's (IDx) is about 6inch long, and thick over the middle of his neck. his mane is good to pull and he doesn't care - i'm just rubbish at it.

Tom's (welsh cob x han) is about 4inch long, but has half of it hogged out. (i know this sounds weird) his mane is like wire wool, and parts down the center. if you take just the one half, its still far too thick to plait so we take a pair of clippers up the center of his crest, and when we have to plait pull the 2 sides together so no-one can tell and it looks just like he has a thick mane... he's such a weird horse, he's 16h pony with a welsh cob bog brush for a mane and a pretty little Hanoverian tail.... jumps like he's pure WB but broncs like any naughty pony.

I have a Friesian gelding at the moment and his mane is about 2 1/2 feet long which is kept in a running plait most of the time as he loves to bodysurf in mud!
