On monday my horse had acute colic (we are thinking from eating all the leaves that had blown into the field after the gales we had on the Sunday). My mare is in foal, so was rather worried, but by the evening she had picked up. Yesterday she was ok, she still had dihorrea, but was alert, and was eating and drinking. Today she has been off her feed again and is not drinking. She looks alert, but has been laying down more than normal, and still has dihorrea. Is it normal for a horse to still be like this 48 hours after a colic attack????? Am debating wether to call the vet out (again!), but don't want to waste time and money if this is a normal part of recovery. Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Colic can last for weeks, it is not just an acute problem. Colic is a general term for dysfunction of the digestive sytem, so although people think of it as a short term issue it isnt always, depending on the exact problem. There are several types of colic with varying severity but as a general rule the quicker it is treated the better the prognosis

If the horse is not showing normal behaviour then the problem is still there, so until you know what it is and its treated accordingly it could get worse. You should get the vet out again asap

had vet out again, he is thinking either colic brought on by gastric ulcers, or salmonella. My horse has been tubed, and had a load of pain killers, so is looking better at the mo. Taken blood and faecal samples, so hopefully we will find out xactly what is wrong.
