I put stable bandages on after a showjumping competition today at about half 3, my horse is in over night. I'm going up to see him in a bit but should i take them off or will they be ok until morning? How long is too long and will they cause any harm?
Thanks

Should be ok till in the morning loads of competition people bandage overnight after a comp, we bandage over night after hunting. I take it you have got some sort of fibregee/gamgee or pad under bandages, wouldnt leave them over night if not.

They'll be fine til morning

I always take mine off, on the simple premise that when I get in from a day out hunting/eventing etc I can't wait to take off my boots and socks and give my feet a rest so I figure the horse must feel the same! Anthropomorphosis? Moi?

ive never used stable bandages..the people at my yard have a rather old fashioned approach (not to slag them off as they are brilliant) would you suggest using them when i compete this weekend. saf will be jumping 3 days in a row? also should bother with these leg cooling gels? sorry to hijack your thread...

Horsey will be fine with the bandages on. In the winter my mare is stabled nearly everynight in bandages because her legs fill, and for warmth. If she is in all night and all day and all night again(restricted grazing), I put the bandages on the night before then the following morning I take the bandages off and put them back on, and do the same the following evening until she goes out again.

ali_m I think the original poster means should she bandage overnight following a competition with new bandages, not the ones the horse was competed in. Personally if my horse has worked hard I like to give his legs a nice wash/rinse, put some colling gel or possibly like ice on and then stable bandage overnight (do it as a precaution really). It all depends on how hard the horse has worked, if they've hardly done anything then i probably won't bother.

Laurasaf i would probably bandage her if she is doing a lotof jumping just to be on the safe side and colling gels would also help. It depends on how tough the horse is but it's always better to be safe than sorry!
