How long to arrange transport from Ireland?

Is it normal to have to wait 10 days or more to get your horse shipped over? I picked what I thought was the best transport firm and apparently everyone else has too! They had said first load this week, now it’s next weekend. Trying not to get frustrated with waiting as this might be normal, but it means i’m missing the dry weather window for introducing him. And obviously I’m itching to meet him. Luckily the sellers are being lovely about hanging on to him.

It’s very normal for them to delay until they have a full load and 10 to 14 days is not unusual at all.

I shall just sit and fidget then ? I think they have too many rather than not enough from what I gather due to last weeks auctions.

Waiting is a pain, but better that than using an alternative firm that is less popular or doesn’t have such a good reputation to get him here sooner.

Gosh, I must have gotten lucky with the timing for mine then, bought her one day, she was on the boat the next and here the day after! I don't think my nerves could have handled an additional 2 week wait! All fingers crossed for a safe journey!

Outstanding in my field!

I bought mine Tuesday, vetted Wednesday, shipped Thursday for overnight delivery, arrived midday Friday!

Having read another thread on here, a single load would have been within my reach, and I would consider if there ever is a next time. Especially if I would otherwise have to wait for someone to make a load up.

This happened to me and I got impatient so rang around other companies with good reputation. They recommended me a guy who did single loads and he brought Finn over a couple of days later rather than another 10 days. He had a night and a day at their yard in the UK then down to me. Great journey for him. I just couldn’t wait ?

I think you guys set my expectations high!? Cavan sales I think is the issue right now, lots of horses set for the UK. I decided against a single load as I thought maybe for a yearling who has never been anywhere some company and a big solid lorry might be better (I could be entirely wrong!).

I’m definitely twitching, but given he’s a yearling it’s not like anything exciting happens when he gets here (except for BBPs likely reaction!) so I should be more patient.

Try Eric Gillies, i used them and they where fab. I specifically asked for a 3.5t, just less stressful for youngsters as they can lie down if they get tired on the long journey.

I hadn’t thought of it that way. I was just thinking that company might be helpful.

I rung Eric Gillies and they couldn’t help themselves but they recommended a lovely guy with a 3.5t. They were really lovely x

Company would indeed be useful, and it's pretty unlikely that a horse will lie down whilst being transported.

i guess it depends on how long they are being transported. When weve had weanlings delivered from ireland, the transporters have said they lay down at some point. With brexit the transporters seem to be coming via Belfast now, so it makes the trip longer.

If they are in a large truck then they dont lie down. I just think for youngsters on a long journey the option should be there. Hence 3.5t are better IMO.

I have transported horses between Ireland and England many, many times. Weanlings and foals do often lie down: this is not a weanling.

No, but he is very young and heading for a long journey. I nearly bought a yearling from Cornwall way this year, spoke to a reputable transporter who insisted that if i wanted her to travel then he would have to give her extra space to lie down if she wanted as its such a long journey. Each to their own.
