How long to give Gastrogard

Hi.

How long do you guys give your ulcer horses Gastrogard? I’m thinking of giving mine Gastrogard for 2 weeks…
Are you not using it under veterinary supervision? Has the horse been scoped? If so what type of ulcers? Gastroguard only really works for squamous ulcers.

We had 4 weeks of it for our squamous stage 2/3 ulcers but obviously scoped before and after to ensure it was the correct dose and right type of ulcers..and that they had gone

my vet will come at some point… he will perform a gastroscopy on him, so we’ll see if he has ulcers. it’s good you told me this, because i didn’t think this through

You must scope, otherwise you could just be throwing money away. If there are ulcers then 2 weeks of Gastroguard will not be sufficient alone- at the very least you will need a month and a real look at why the horse has developed ulcers in the first place (management issues and/ or pain elsewhere generally)

We didn’t scope our closest place to is like 3 hours away in a box
But he was showing strong symptoms and my vet suggested it
I would only treat on vet advice as it’s ridiculously expensive

yeah i thought so after too…i called my vet and next time he is in my province he will come and scope him.
forgot to mention, i live in turkey so the nearest clinic is 14 hours away 🥲
what are some general causes of ulcers?
my horse is an showjumper ottb so that is basically a recipe for ulcers

You need at least a month plus I would then give 3 or 4 days as a weaning off dose rather than just suddenly stopping. Ask your vet for advice.

what was his symptoms?
just off the track
Was biting at his stomach when he was standing
Ears back as soon as you looked or touched his stomach
And he’s a very civil boy would never bite or kick you just very very sore

Even just standing in the field his stomach was very sore

mine doesn’t like when i touch him anywhere at all…and a bit lethargic

I would have your vet look at him
I’m not sure what would cause him to be lethargic
he gets annual vet checks. i’m assuming it’s either parasite resistance or/and ulcer/gut issues. i’ve gotten his blood done (normal blood test and biochemistry) everything is fine and normal everything is in its bracket
