My pony has a cough probably viral as one of his fieldmates has had something similar which clear up in just over a week without needing treatment other than rest and another one of his fieldmates has been coughing for 10 days but today seemed much better.

I know horses like people have different rates of recovery from viruses so what might take 10 days for one may take longer for others and some might not get the virus at all or have no symptoms.

However my pony has now been coughing for nearly two weeks with no signs of getting better. I have had the vet out for him who feels he has developed a secondary bacterial infection and sore throat following the virus as he has snot mainly white snot very ocassional tiny bit of green and glands are slightly raised. I have taken his temperature every day since he started coughing and it has been normal the whole time and remains normal. Good appetite as well though he is has been rather tired.

He has been on antibiotics for 4 days now and coughing is still bad though tiredness has gone and he is trotting in the field again and being more active which unfortunately causes him to cough. He has been on field rest the whole time he has been coughing and not having any hay or dry feeds.

He is on a course of antibiotics for 9 days and I expect it will take a while to see a difference.

I was just wondering how long it normally takes a cough to go in horses if they have had a virus and if they can drag on a bit. My pony has not had a cough before and I have not had experience of coughing in other horses either. I know when I had a cough due to a virus and a bacterial infection it took nearly 6 weeks for me to recover and I had two sets of antibiotics.

If he does not get better he will need to be scoped which unfortunately will be unlikely to be covered on insurance as he has been scoped before though for a different issue. As he has had a chest infection in the past {no coughing just temperature, and difficulty breathing} I doubt any of this will be covered but I will of course pay for any tests/treatment he might need.
