We’ve just moved my pony to a new yard as we’ve moved miles from his old place.

We’ve had some behaviour issues come up as his routine has completely changed (from out 24/7 to in at night)

How long will on average it take for him to settle?

He’s starting to get a bad rep for playing up when coming in and normally he’s an angel

Only took a week for mine, that was 20 years ago, but....we did have jumping stable doors and rearing up walls etc when he didn't want to be in, so settling in, only a week, being a Dick when not getting his way....pretty much always, and still is if he doesn't want worming etc, maybe its a Ginger thing.

It depends on the yard and the other horses for mine. I allow 1-2 months for the new routine to sette, and in that time I bring in using a bridle and with the others as that's when my horse can be difficult.

He never properly settled on one yard. I think it was just too busy for him - lots of other (noisy, smelly) businesses on the property quite close to the stables & his field and irregular hours for them to be working.

Yes I’ve started bringing in etc with a bridle until he calms down

Hopefully he’ll feel better then in a month or two

Thanks

It may take some time and patience as it’s a big change in routine when he s used to being out all the time. Is he not catching well or barging and not leading nicely from field to stable? Or is he rushing to get in?

He is easily caught and walks fine from field to yard. Once he yard he gets panicky and snorty. Won’t stand still tied up outside stable and won’t go in. Once in he will settle after about 10 to 20 minutes.

Actually I think if he is settling after ten minutes or so he ll progress to getting more comfortable more quickly as he gets used to the new routine , so hang on in there , handle him in a matter of fact manner and he should come right. Just do a check of stable to see if rats are around or electricity boxes etc..very occasionally they can upset horses.
