How long to work?

So you know the saying “if it doesn’t rain……” well 10 weeks after coblet has had annular ligament surgery on both hinds he’s developed ulcers. Well we’re 99% certain as he’s been displaying symptoms including weight loss, picky eating, grumpier than usual! Biting at his sides, irritable at rugging and grooming, so given that he’s been on box rest, and on bute post surgery the vet has been willing to treat without a scope. He’s on Omeprazole once daily and now on day 6, he already eating his hay a little better but how long should I expect it to take until the other symptoms abate?

My vet told me it can take 4/5/6 weeks , if they are really bad theyre not always clear after the first course / rescope and and second course might be needed to some symptoms might still be there

We never scoped so guess I have to see where we are after the month course and then possibly scope of needed
 
Mine had what I super were chronic ulcers, it took the best part of 3 months to resolve. He didn’t show external signs that was on scope.
 
Just picking up this thread again as a month of Omeprazole improved his appetite somewhat but not other behaviours such as his general mood, reluctance to stand at the mounting block and his stuffiness going forward which is difficult as the vet has now advised he needs to start trot work as part of his rehab following his surgery. We’re going on holiday next week so he’s goi bf to have a weeks break on full 24/7 turnout and then we’re going to treat again with the addition of sulcufate (sp?) in case it’s Hund gut ulcers also? Any advice on how to dose it?

I was always given Sucralfate alongside the omeprazole it did work very well.
If i remember rightly it was a powder in the feed twice a day
 
Check with your vet but I seem to remember sucralfate and omeprazole needing to be separated by a certain time frame? Can’t remember how long though and advice may have changed, it’s been a few years.
 
The omeprazole injection is now given for more stubborn cases I think. I’ve also had a couple of instances where Karidox (antibiotic) has been prescribed too. Might be worth asking about those?
 
Thanks all, we’ll a month of Omeprazole hasn’t really produced any miraculous results so in a fortnight when I get back from hols we’re going to try another month of Omeprazole with the addition of Sucralfate also. He’ll just be turned out 24/7 whilst I’m away so low stress on good grazing and hopefully he can just decompress for a week before we start treatment again l.
