Hiya just wondering if anyone who has 'lost' 'a horse could shed some light.
How long did it take for you to get back into riding and did you feel the same after.
as some of you may know im having to have my mare pts and just wondered what time frame other people had. I wont rush myself and will only go back to the yard when ready but I just wondered what other peoples experiences were like.
thanks in advance. Leah.
P.S a nice bottle of *insert booze here* and a *insert food item here* to drown your sorrows in or just to have a bloody good scoff

I am so sorry to hear your sad news, I lost my mare on July 26th so know how you are feeling. I think it depends on you as a person and there is no right or wrong regarding how long you wait before getting another horse if you ask 10 people you will get 10 different answers. I went through all sorts of emotions. I went back to the yard 3 days after i lost her or i would never have done it i made sure it was a time when i could be on my own.I could not bring myself to muck out her stable so did that a few days after.
I now have a new boy complete opposite in all ways from my girl. Again i went through lots of emotions deciding to get one "so soon" i felt guilty and disrespectful to my mare and all sorts of weird things. I then realised i was more worried about what other people thought until my close friends told me any one who knows me knew how much i loved her and how much i did for her and that i always did the right thing for her and if i need a horse in my life then to just do it.
I am getting on really well with my boy but yes i do feel different about him but i spent 9 years with my mare and knew each other inside out. Not sure we will ever have the same bond but that doesnt mean i regret getting him or wont do the best for him.
Big hugs for when the time comes. x

Tough decision your very brave! Nobody really, can tell you how your feel and how long it will be until you want to ride again. I had my mare PTS in May, and after a lot of vodkas I then went into a complete mental overdrive to find a replacement after about three weeks. I did find a horse with a LWVTB who was the complete opposite to my mare. It wasn't a particularly happy partnership and I ended up giving him back. I then spent a few weeks dealing with the fact that my mare had gone (which I probably should have done previously) and then went out and found my new boy at the end of August. His gorgeous, yes he probably is a little similar in looks and there general attitude (but I think I just like that kind of horseanality) but I think his brilliant and I will probably love him just as much as my old girl but differently. I would just say, be nice to yourself!

i had my tb pts two years ago ,i had other horses and kept riding but my tb was my special one. i always wanted to get another one but just couldnt find "the one" but last july by chance i came across a little tb ,he was very grumpy and painfully thin but i just liked him and even tho it took around 3 months to really feel like we bonded now im mad for him -hes so much fun and im loving it! my point is dont rush yourself-until you have sorted out your mare you wont know how you feel, you might need another one the next day of it might take a bit of time (((((hugs)))))

Oh hun I am sorry to hear your news. My friend had her old TB PTS in January and couldn't face the yard for about 3 weeks, she'd had her for 13 years though and they went through a lot together. I know I'll be a mess when I lose my Ollycob :(
