for a very hairy un clipped horse to loose it's winter coat?

My grey boy grows a very dense but soft and fine coat through the winter and as he wont tolerate clipping in any shape form or manner, every year at this time we have the dreaded moult :-(

He is out 24/7 now and naked and his field is a mass of white patches but there is a lot of hair to fall out!!! I brush him as much as I can stand most days but it just goes everywhere and I must be reminded not to wear balm or a fleece jumper during his grooming sessions lol

Really just wondered how long it takes other people's hairies, to looses their winter coats? I have a feeling my boy wont be hair free for a few weeks yet!

AGES!!!!
Sucks doesnt it! My hairy yak is losing hair by the bucket load. I stand and groom him for hours, end up standing knee deep in hair but he looks no less hairy:rolleyes:

What sort of brush do you use? I got a soft rubber one, not a traditional rubber curry comb as the "teeth" are longer and softer - this tends to work well. I also found one of those metal looped strippers useful on the rump (where I can't reach as well) and the fur seems to grow thicker there :)

Furminators are good as is a large pumice stone.
With the weather being so warm I am riding mine and making him sweat. Once the sweat has dried and gone crispy I can pull good handfulls out and not get so much fluff up my nose,in my ears, bra, knickers etc:D

Not only have I got the horse hair to contend with but my long haired cat is moulting as well, However, the cat is easier to deal with as I take him to my friends dog grooming parlour and get him clipped!

What's more, horses moult twice a year! (or atleast the shetlands do :)) and I remember last year, they didn't know what time of year it was with all the temperature changes, and I don't think my mare actually stopped moulting! haha

Swift hasn't even started yet! Usually takes till well into june to loose it all and he even still has tufty bits at beginning of july:eek:

it varies with my horses from April to June. The hairier the horse the longer to shed usually! i also have an oldie who takes ages - well into june and he is not that hairy.
