muck out 5 horses (very messy), put down 1/2 bed
scrub 5 large buckets and refill full with water

clean hay steamer
put hay steamer on ( filling hay steamer of water takes 5mintues)
Get horse in, put indoor rugs on, put outdoor stuff away

fill up replenishing buckets (about 7)
empty all wheelbarrows
fork up muck heap.

between morning and afternoon.
put on hay steamer again

over lunch put horse out (boots and rug)
before lunch give horses haynets, water and skip out

afternoon.
put hay steamer on again
put horse out booted and suited! Get horse in.
groom all horses for 15 mins under solarium (requires removing horse from stable, removing rugs, putting all back on, with bandages, putting back in stable)
muck out stables again as messy, put down bed, fill buckets in stables.
last hay steam
poo pick school
afternoon nets
Sweep yard
last poo pick
last watering
fill up replenishing buckets
make up feeds, then feed
empty wheelbarrows
fork up muck heap

i cant work out if I'm just being very slow? As the groom before me did this quicker......
please note I haven't included any riding/lunging....and I may do up to 3 horses a day, about 45 minutes each, plus 15 mins tacking up/untacking.
so my question is: how long would this take you? Just to find out unbiased opinions!

Am a bit confused as to how many horses there is to do and if they are all turned out or just in rotation?

needs to he a bit clearer

Oh sorry! Rush typing!!!
5 horses
3 to 4 turned out in rotation in only 1 place for about 1 hour day. All wear 4 boots, over reaches and heavyweight rug.

all day as three hours are taken up riding as they have to be tacked up and untacked as well as ridden So a good 8 hours. 4 in the morning and 4 in the afternoon

I got bored reading, sorry! but the morning stuff would have taken me all day! sounds like a right mission! leave horses in turn out rugs whilst in, for get boots and bandages!

Took me long enough to muck out one stable a couple of weeks ago, so just left the other one, haven't completely cleared it yet! luckily the horses don't have to come in so its not too much of a rush job! haha

Haha don't worry! I realised just how much I do do by typing it! As much as I would love to leave them in t/o rugs and not boots/bandages they aren't mine! So do as the owner wishes!

Thank you everyone so far....the other groom was obviously super sonic!

Or possibly cutting corners

And also gone I take it ;)
That's all doable during the day when it's all going swimmingly, throw in one uncooperative nag or one hoof that needs soaking and you're not getting a lot of sleep that day :)

Been there done that, don't work with horses any more. Now they're a hobby and I have a nice job:)

Or possibly cutting corners

Or possibly took short cuts.....

As much as I wish this was the case I spent a week working with her and her attention to detail was ridiculous! However I'm managing it all in the time suggested so I think I'm ok!

Molasses - it's only temporary, normal groom traveling but coming back.......but I get free training for stage 3!!!!! Plus good experience!

That is my view she must have run from place to place .
Although some people have an amazing knack of mucking out very quickly .
OP It's very dispiriting to be playing chase the clock in a game you can't win every day.
How long did the old groom take ?

Edited to say sorry OP cross posted .

The horses could always be turned out into the field and allowed to be horses? Surely not only would they be happier but it would more than halve your workload!
My apologies if there is good reason they can only have 1 hours turnout a day or I have read it wrong.

Oh gosh I have no idea, way too much info and not really enough imagination going on in my mind to work it out; depending on circumstances it could be anywhere from a couple of hours to many hours. For example if I wrote down everything I do in the mornings, it's a lot, and some might think because there's so much written down that it would take me hours and hours to do. It doesn't, because I have a very good routine going.

So how long did the old groom take? And how long does it take you?

It would take me a week to do all that! I felt worn out reading it. I work at a very leisurely pace with lots of coffee and cigarette breaks :) I'd be sacked as a groom on my first day :)

15 minutes untacking/tacking could be done much quicker, if it's 15 per untacking or tacking up.

It would take me forever, but I'm really slow at doing everything. I did a work placement as a groom and they were seriously speedy. Averaged 5 minutes per bed, maximum about 8 minutes for a really messy one. They took about 2 minutes to tack and boot up, could stuff a haynet in 30 seconds. They just walked very quickly, all the time, and just seemed to move so quickly. They could do 3 or 4 beds in the time it took me to do one!

Top show jumpers and only have postage stamp grazing in the summer.....currently turned out in school one at a time!

I this is it....once I get my routine I'll be much quicker! Old groom between 7 to 7 and 1/2 hours.
Me...well yesterday was 8 and 1/2 hours....however it was first day by my self doing everything! Today it was 7 and 1/2 hours! So a bit better

15 minutes untacking/tacking could be done much quicker, if it's 15 per untacking or tacking up.

I've put 15mins overall for both beginning and end...I haven't really timed myself here! Most likely about 5 minutes really!

By the time I had done all the yard work - I don't think I could be bothered to ride - but then I'm not employed as a groom & rider - I hope you get a day off

What are they bedded on? I can do a shavings bed pretty quick if I have to (used to reckon 10 mins max to do a shavings bed, hay up and clean out drinker) but a straw bed would take me much longer, especially if grotty. It depends on where the muck heap is, where the hay barn is etc etc etc. Nowdays it would take me a couple of weeks but once upon a time I'd have fitted it in somehow. Not until I knew where I was going though and had a system. You'll get there once you get a routine going I'm sure.

Just think how much icecream you can eat working that hard. That's what I miss most about being on the yard :p

Yep weekends off! However I have my two to ride/work after work....plus all the other stuff you have to do with a horse!

Agree, I think to do it to a reasonable standard (including the riding/lunging) this is a ful days work. Do you get time for breaks/lunch ??

Yes i get a good lunch break so sometime off/to sleep!

jt - it's only the muck heap which is a pain! Down a muddy path! Everything else is pretty compact!

however I don't like bedmax! Worst bedding ever!!!!and ice cream...puffy! I wish...... Maybe at the end I will be able to eat some!

Well i do:

turn out and change rugs, pick feet out of approx 3 - 4 horses (including walking up a steep slippy slope to field which takes 5 mins per time)
Clean/rinse out approx 20 feed buckets
Muck out 6 - 7 stables fully inc banks dug out
Fill and weigh 6 - 7 nets
Have a 15 min tea break :P

I start at 830 and finish between 12-00 - 12-30 :D

I reckon if I started at 8am I'd be done by 5pm...3 days later. Jeez I definitely couldn't do all that in a day, but then it takes me 1 hour 20 mins to turn out 1, muck out 1 messy straw stable, fill 3 large haynets and soak them, hang them up and put down a new bed.

Ha ha glad I'm not the only one who takes forever! Got a friend who can muck out in the time it takes me to go the get my shavings fork. Just as well it's a hobby I'd be sacked or quit on my first day.

Or possibly took short cuts.....

Or got ridiculously good at her routine...

My sister worked on a yard this winter as a WP, and aimed with her colleagues to have all the horses completely done by 4. Started at 7 I think, with a proper lunch break and they breakfast after they were done with the mucking out. So 6-8 hours depending on what else was going on on the yard (they also hacked them out/ took them up the gallops, or got them ready to be schooled).

Once you're in the routine you will get it done in reasonable time. When I started my first sole charge job I wondered what the heck I was going to do! But once I was in the routine it wasn't so bad, but as suggested above you only have to have one thing go wrong, or something added to the list and you're on for a late one.

I used to eat a sandwich quickly then have a sleep in my lunch break, or didn't have a lunch break depending on the day. Started at 7 and finished on average at 6 but was often after 7. Never again!

Ive been helping at a local dealers and whilst I can muck out quickly (5 stables in an hour inc putting occupants on/off walker and emptying muck onto heap) I am still seriously slow at tacking up (I swear I blink and the ft groom is already in the saddle!) and tack cleaning. I think as you get to know the routine itll definitley get easier and therefore quicker! Yo certainly sounds like she gets her monies worth out of you tho.
