How long would you expect to wait for the results from x rays?

I had x rays taken of my boy last Tuesday and I am still waiting for the results. The x rays needed to be sent off to the hospital and apparently they were sent in the wrong format so then needed to be posted. I find this a bit hard to understand as he had x rays done 6 weeks ago on a Tuesday and I had the results by the Thursday so I don’t really see why they should have a problem this time round.

Now I am not known for my patience and although this is not critical it is part of his recovery plan (he fractured his elbow in October) so I am trying to be calm about it and not kick off but how long do I leave it before I start getting a bit annoyed with someone?

I am ringing the vets every day and have emailed the hospital a couple of times and whilst I do not want to hassle people I do think it is a bit unreasonable having to wait a week for the results.

I think I just needed a bit of a rant and now I need to go back to waiting patiently:(

I agree, that's unreasonable. When Henry had x-rays I had the results the same day, so with a hospital involved I'd say 24hrs or 48 at the most. If they sent them in the wrong format, what's the problem in changing the format?

Who took the x rays?
Our vet have portable machines so results are instant.
Even if they had to be sent to be seen by a specialist is say no more than a week, 2 being generous.
Call them and demand to know what is going on.

Glad it’s not just me being inpatient. What I struggle to understand is why there wasn’t a problem the first time (about 6 weeks ago) but there was this time, even if this is the case why didn’t they just look back to the last lot to see the format they needed?

It was my normal vets who took the x rays, they have a mobile unit that comes out and although I did see the x rays instantly I need to get the results from the hospital to what is the next stage of his recovery plan. I do not want to name and shame the vets as to be honest they were fantastic at getting everything arranged when it first happened but I do feel quite let down by them this time round.

Won't use a vet that doesn't have the portable instant xrays. I want to see what money is spent on. Plus I get to ask questions and learn at the same time.

Yes, too long a wait!

They were portable instant x rays and I did see them but I need the advise from the hospital not the vets which is where it seems to have fallen down this time round.

With portable machine my vet takes them back to her surgery and rings hour or so later.

In equine hospital results were 15 minutes later with the horse still in the stocks in case more pictures were needed.

I think its unreasonable too, had them same day with both portable & taking the horse to the vets for larger areas. Even sending them to the hospital should only account for 2 or 3 days more.

We have normally have instant results from the vet when he brings out the mobile xray machine - when we went to the hospital we had the results as the xrays were being taken - the vet discussed each one with us as it came through on the monitor. The only time we had to wait was when our vet wanted to consult with a colleague over one of the mobile xrays. He phoned me back within 2 hours.

depends on vet i have some xray machines where they were instant other machines at my vet they have to take them back to clinic where they phoned me later that day or the next

Finally got to speak to the vet last night and the good news was worth the wait. He spent his first night out of the stable last night and I can introduce 2 minutes trot and start to build that up over the next couple of months.

The hospital have said that in 2 months time I should be back to a normal horse – that will be a first as he has never been normal :D
