How long would you leave your horse tied up if you weren't there?

I was taught to never leave them tied up unattended, even if it ment running to the loo! My mare managed to tangle herself completely up in her reins when I tied her up outside her stable when I went in to collect me grooming brushes (less than a min)

I would never leave a horse unattended while tied up. Any horse, including my own - I can't predict the future, and until I can :D I'm not willing to take the risk.

A fellow livery (now left for pastures new) used to leave her horses tied up (just tied up, no haynet etc) for long periods of time while she went off and had cups of tea... apparently this was something they "had to learn" as part of the "programme" she was following. She did it until another livery pointed out that by doing so, she was limiting the use of the space in the yard for other liveries...

We have a few people at our yard who do this - leave them tied up with a net in the communal area for hours while they muck out/socialise/walk the dog etc. The horses seem quite happy but it means no-one else can use the space. My mare is a bit funny in her stable so I prefer to groom and tack her up in this communal area - takes about 10 minutes and I don't leave her unattended. When the horse parkers are about it delays me from riding as I have to wait till theirs are moved before I can get mine tacked up. To me its just selfishness and bad manners to monopolise the communal area, in addition to the possible safety issues. of leaving horses tied up for this length of time. (these are tied up for at least an hour often longer). If its your own place and your horses are trained to tie up (like some tekking ponies/western horses) fair enough but not on a busy livery yard.

I used to have a yard away from main yard just my 2 both a bit neurotic about being alone and right by yard owners household also wooden and not that solid. I used to tie one up by school in securely fenced area while I rode in school but I was right there to keep an eye. Left bug tied up this morning while he dried in sunshine and I washed car but I could see him and he watched me. After being bathed saturday and sunday including his boy bits saturday, and sponged off after ride this morning you could see him thinking 'that woman will wash anything!'
