how long...

I took it slowly with my first horse, she was only 4 and hadn't done much. I took her for walks in hand and led her around the school, and goof job too as she spooked at everything! lol

TBH, i let her settle in, spent LOADS of time with her, just grooming and talking to her etc, then began lunging her in the school, short hacks, lessons on her and it's been the best for us both.

All horses are different so i guess it depends on you & your new horse but i would take it slowly initially.

Im out of action at the min! Fractured rib! Can't wait to get back on but i'll be taking it easy at first lol

What have you got?

Enjoy anyway!

Day affter I brought him home and then nearly everyday since.

Started off in paddock and slowly built up to hacking on his own over a couple of weeks.

Took him for his first lesson 10 days after I had him.

Haven't had a significant problems.

I left it a week, my horse was unfit and hadn't been handled much in the 5 months before I got him as he had been turned away. So I wanted to get him used to being groomed etc first and then I rode him in the school once and then hacked out with a sensible horse. Now (5 months on) he is in full work and I happily hack him out alone and in company, and I've started having some lessons on him and everythings going really well!

Next day. Much to impatient to wait any longer, but i figure that it atleast gives them a day to settle in. I know people who have got on the same day, which tbh isn't that terrible a thing to do, because if you took a horse to a show you'd be getting on it there and then wouldn't you.

I gave mine a day to settle in then rode her out with company and she was fine.

Rode her every day after that so that she knew she was going to be ridden all the time and that she wasn't on her holidays!!

I'm glad I'm not the only exciteable new mum who can't wait lol. He arrived on Sunday. I spent most of Monday (booked the day off work especially!) grooming him and playing and lunged him i got on for 10 mins at the end of the session and just walked him round and got off.

Tuesday, he had the farrier and he got quite bored so I just lunged him and turned him back out to chill - I think he gets mentally tired and today I got straight on him (without lunging him first) and followed a friend over the road to use a friend's menage for a bit of a leg stretch etc... he was abit wide eyed at first. we were walking/trotting round for bout half hour.

he is 7 and was broken in bout a year ago but doone v little since. he is such a gem and has had the most fantastic life, having had just one loving home from birth he has quite clearly been schooled lovely

I rode the next day as I picked him up in the afternoon. I would have ridden the same day if it had been morning. If it's not a very young horse it will have been used to going to shows etc and being ridden in strange places so don't see the problem, unless traveled a long way or stressed from traveling.

I took a bit of time with George as he's my first horse, I just walked him inhand for the first 3 days, showed him round, did in-hand work in the school etc. I then rode when OH was there for moral support, I was actually really nervous in case he wasn't how I remembered - needless to say he was lovely!
