How long is best for foal to be away from mum when being weaned? said foal will be in next field when returns home, not bcak with its mother, foal is currently at stud.
Thanks!! been just 4 weeks and I want him home. We all miss him so much, mum has her oldest with her so she is quite happy. Everybody has their own views on how long, was thinking 8weeks.
My friend had her mare and foal at the same yard for weaning. Kept them in separate field herds. She was 10 months old, and after 6 weeks of weaning, my friend took her for a walk around the perimeter of the fields. She slipped on something and scared herself, bolted off, friend couldn't hold her, and she ran through the electric fencing to get to mum in her field and straight away started suckling!!!!!
The mare's milk hadn't dried up either.... I wonder if it was because she still had contact with her being stabled next to each other? So she has moved her away for the winter to a different yard and kept Mum at ours!
Most people I have spoken to usually say between 1 - 2 months. My friends mare was ultra clingy and mothery to her foal, so in all honesty, after that fiasco I think she needs alot longer period of separation! I guess it is all about a trial and error process to see what works with your mare xx
