How loose should surcingles be?

Do you have a set way of measuring how loose/tight they should be?
I've always struggled to get a happy medium - dont want them too tight so that they cant lie down/roll comfortably and they cant be too loose or they'll catch their legs. I have to fiddle around for ages with new rugs, so i just wondered if there's like a rule or a set way of measuring?

You should be able to fit one hand width ways (thumb agains the belly, little finger against the surcingle if you gt what I mean) between the surcingle and the belly.

I always struggle to find the right looseness.Now i usually go with the handswidth away from the belly.

Ive always measured it that i could fit my 4 fingers btween the horse and sucingle

I opt for a hand width too - more or less.

Can probably fit 2 hands in. Never had a problem though, but maybe i will tighten them!
