Can anyone who has stabled away from home help me? We're stabling at the Trailblazers finals, the first time I'll be using temporary stables so I have no idea how many bags of shavings I would need! I'm stabling for 6 nights with a 16hh horse.

We don't use shavings at home, so I would prefer not to buy more than I need. If I order in advance it's cheaper, and the price goes down after buying 6 bales so I will get at least that. Is 6 likely to be enough? I'm assuming the stables will be small, and that no shavings will be left from anyone else.

Have you got the stable sizes? you'll need a few to make the bed then I'd say one every 2 days depending on how messy he is because he will be in there all day apart from when being ridden. Are you able to buy extras when you're there?

You might find there's already some bedding in there or they could be on grass so you won't need much if any. I took 2 bales of shavings and 2 bales of cardboard to a 3 day and had a nice deep bed.

Thanks for the replies.

I was hoping they would be on grass as it wouldn't be so bad if we got a little low by the last day then. Does anyone know if the ones at Stoneleigh are on grass? I have no idea how big the stables are, when I've seen them before they've looked very small, around 10x10.

I'll double check if I'll be able to buy any there incase we run low when we're there

We were on the hardstanding too (at Trailblazers last year) - right on the lorry park! https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?...0254557245458.332774.511365457&type=3&theater The white snout poking out is my horse and I was sat on the lorry ramp at the time. :)

I'm pretty sure my stable had shavings in when we got there - I think I took 8 bales with me (I work for a feed supplier so cheaper for me to bring my own) but only used 3 or maybe 4. I was anal about mucking out though  especially as I was close enough (and bored enough occasionally!) to hear her every fart.

Have a fab time, I loved every minute last year and I wish I could afford to go again this year.

ETA: Molly is 15.2 to give some idea of stable size...

I'm starting with the showjumping which is the first competition of the finals, so I'm not holding out much hope for some left over shavigs unfortunately. Thanks for the replies, I'm starting to think around 8 bales, and hopefully I could always buy more there if I need.

Although looking at that pic, I'm getting a little worried how I'll pitch the tent on the hardstanding, starting to think booking a hotel would've been a much better option... !!

Phew!! I already have visions of trying to pitch in weather like this, I may end up having a Mary Poppins moment!!

I don't have any pics of the camping (I was lucky enough to be loaned a 7.5t lorry for the week so we stayed in that) but I would consider taking a bike if there's space! We were there for dressage finals & it was OK if you were one of the first there & able to camp up near the lorry bit but it seemed people were having to camp MILES away the later they got there. (Time may have exaggerated the distance for me though!)

I want to go again!

When my daughter does PC camp, we take a rubber mat to put in middle and then use 4-5 bales for the week. The first year we didn't use a rubber mat and ended up using 7 bales.

Were not getting there until the morning of the competition as I'm working the day before,so I may end up getting a dud spot, a bike is sounding like a good idea!

Thanks for the idea of rubber mats, hadn't thought of that, could always take one out of the trailer (if were not parked miles away!)
