how many bales of straw do you use in a week??

Hi all,

I have 2 horses, 1 who's very tidy and on deep litter and the other is very messy and on mats but with a big bed. (both on straw)

In the deep litter stable, i can usually manage with 1 bale of straw a week and I take the wet out on the weekends (take poo out everyday!)

In the stable with mats, I usually take out wet and poo every day (because he's normally really messy!) and so I usually end up putting 2 or sometimes 3 bales of straw in a week!!! :O

But recently my horse who's on mats has been really tidy and for the past week I've managed to only use 1 bale of straw!

I pay £3.25 for a bale of straw.....what does everyone else pay?? also how many bales do people use and are you on deep litter or not??

I pay £15 for a big square bale of straw and I use approximately one bale a month.

I like a thick, deep bed though with big banks but I do take out all the pooh and wet daily. At the weekend I tend to spray the floor with disinfect the floor and leave up to air before putting the bed back down. I'd love to air it more often, but working hours means that it isn't possible.

I use a round bale per month between 2, both are fully mucked out every day.
