In a week how many times do you ride? What would you say is a good amount for a just broken three coming four year old. I see a lot of people work this age group very hard. Our yards youngster who is for next month was broken last winter ridden once maybe twice a week then turned away. He is now back in work and does at most three times a week of ten to twenty minutes a tinged. I don't want to upset or judge anyone I would just like to know the reasons behind wanting so much so young. I apologise if anyone thinks I'm judging methods.

If i've got this right horse is rising 4 & will actually be 4 next month? So lightly backed at 3&1/2 & turned away till now. Personally sounds fine to me to do 3 times a week of 10 to 20 mins. If the work is 20mins lunging in a chambon on a 10m circle then yes, its too much but assuming the work is of a normal level its pretty standard I'd say

I did work with mine when she was that age every other day, so that she could absorb what we were doing. It worked well, sometimes if she didnt 'get' something I would leave it till next time and she would come straight in and 'get' it straight off the next time she was worked. I do think they need time to think about what you are telling them.

I did a hack, a couple of schools and a long reining session normally but mixed it up a bit. However we did get out and about, we did a walk trot dressage test (without trying to make her work in a contact) at the local EC just to get her used to the indoor school. She spent some of the test yelling at the other horses and sidling towards A where they had a cake sale....:-)))))

My 4yo was broken last summer, turned away and is now being ridden. I ride her 3 or so times a week, work & weather dependent. No school so just hacking but schooling when out. She even popped over a few logs yesterday, great fun and she thought so too. I plan to do a walk/trot test next month with her and show her under saddle this summer. Just taking it as it comes and enjoying her immensely.
Oh & yes I don't push her too hard & know her limits for now which I'm sure most 4yo owners do :)
