How many days off do you give your horse in the average week?

I was just wondering how many days off - as in planned days off - the average owner on here permits their horse to have? Not talking about when you're preparing for competition or anything just in an average week. I always plan to give Jack one or two a week but depending on weather and how late it is by the time I get to the yard he sometimes gets 3/4

2 as i can't make it to yard 2 nights a week anyway!

But intend to ride the other 5 days, however i failed last night as it was hammering rain so he got last night off too!

In the winter (no turnout) he is worked everyday but is given one day off of ridden work. In the summer he probably gets 2 days off a week at most.

I can't vote as I don't plan to give my horses any days off a week.

Chloe is currently not allowed to turnout so she gets ridden every day regardless, and I try and do something with Meg everyday too, even if it's lunging instead of riding.

I always give mine a day off a week. I try & think about it as if it were me running every day - I would soon resent it & my muscles would always hurt. A day off gives them a chance to recover & relax.

Sometimes none, sometimes two. I selected one as this is the average. But I do not work him really hard every single day.

But he will get a few breaks throughout the year when he is not ridden for maybe a week.

Blimey you are all very lucky!! In the winter during short days she gets 5 days off. I can only ride at weekends, we have no school or menage and have no choice. When the autumn is drawing in we try and have a quick trot round the block before work and ride properly at weekends, so then probably 1/2 days off a week. In the Summer she just gets one day off.

I wish that I could ride every day

I share and ride three days a week, his owners some weeks ride him another 2/3 times and some weeks not at all... so it depends!

Before I sold my eventer I used to give him 2 days off a week. This is partly because when I worked for a top US event rider in the States all her horses had the weekends off unless they were away competing (nice for us on our weekends home!) and they were all fine and that included horses running at Advanced level.

Also, I agree that if I had to go running every day I would get fed up and would be pretty sore. Then again my horse lived out permanently so it does depend on how much turnout your horse has.

ony one "planned" day off, we get times like the past couple of weeks where things crop up and there is no chance I can ride for a couple of days.
She's such a good do-er she ideally needs worked every day but she just goes stale gets grumpy so the odd day helps

Bondi gets 2 days. He gets hacked 4 days a week as well as schooling and has a one hour lesson one day a week and has the following day off

No planned days off, although he often gets 1 or 2 if the weather is bad or I'm busy.

I don't exactly do hard work though, I often go out for a 30 minute plod round the block

Usually plan 2 days off a week, but due to circumstances, weather and how i might feel he may have 3 or 4 days off occassionallywhich i'm sure he doesn't mind!!

I usually give my girly 2 days off a week but this does vary based on how much work she's done, what the weathers like and how soon I can get to the yard

She is just coming back into work so if I feel she's done lots of work then I often give her an extra day off

Every fourth day - so more than one a week but less than two. But get's flexible in the season around competitions. I give the day before and the day after off.

Pug - He gets 2 days off on average (sometimes 3 though if I am short of time) Although when I have holidays from College he gets ridden 5-6 days a week.

Monty - He is only ridden about 3 times a week as he is 28 years old and semi retired.

Libby - I have her on share so I ride her 3 days a week and her owner rides her 3 days a week ... she only gets one day off but she gets too fizzy if she has much more time off!

when competing she had one day off every 14-18 days usually.some days i would ride twice, others i would only hack out for 30mins so she didnt always get 1-3 hours hard work everyday.she was better with fewer days completely off work.
now shes semi retired she is ridden every other day.
my other horse gets aboout 2 days off a week.
