Hi all id be interested know how many lbs of hay a 17 and a 16h horse are supposed to have, im no good at the maths, and im sure mine have far more than they are supposed to. standered in at night and 2 feeds a day.
As long as my horses aren't overweight i feed ad-lib and don't pay any attention to how much they're supposed to have.
Forage is the best thing for them, i always aim to have hay left in the next when i get there in the morning, i'd rather feed more hay/haylage than feed
You haven't said how long they are in for and how much grazing they have. As a rough guide we have one 16hh horse that gets 16lbs of hay at night, 5lbs haylage in the morning, 3lbs haylage at 11am and 4 hours grazing, and another that gets just 12lbs at night 3lbs in the morning plus 4hrs grazing. We review the amounts weekly and move them up or down as necessary.
I have to watch my mares weight. She is 16.1hh warmblood x and she has 7lbs hay in the morning then turned out for 5 hours, then 15lbs of hay at night - all hay is soaked.
I feed around 20lbs of haylage at night, and that is in from between 5.30 and 7 p.m. and breakfast by 7.00 a.m.
I'd love to feed ad lib but i have to buy in the small bales so could literally end up costing myself a small fortune. The above costs £65 a month as it is.
The bigger 17h is 4yo doing a little work to keep ticking over till spring, The smaller 16h is 17yo semi retired. both come in at 4.30/5 and out from about 8am they are in more than i would like. I have pretty good ground so still have a nibble of grass most of the winter, they wont eat hay in the field yet they would rather the grass. the big lad ahs 20lb and the smaller 16lbs, i feed big bale haylage off a local farmer.
