It is many many years since I bought a pup - all of mine for the last god knows how long have been other peoples rejects. Someone has made me aware of a litter due to hit the ground in Germany that would be of great interest to me. This has prompted me to look at what is available in this country and unsurprisingly there’s nothing that floats my boat. However- question: when did it become permissible for a bitch to have four litters that you could KC register?? It always used to be three…..or so I thought?

In UK think it's 4 litters in her lifetime and 3 in a 3 year period.
I'm not sure what the German KC rules are.
 
Also be aware of how many litters certain stud dogs have sired. Overuse of a particular dog can lead to the “popular sire effect “. This in turn can cause issues in subsequent generations. One certain crufts BIS winner sired 95 litters in a smaller breed numbers wise. There are now very few dogs in this country that don’t have him in their pedigrees numerous times.
 
It varies depending on country and kennel club regulations.
Generally it tends to be max 3 via C-section(which imo is already pushing it by number 3) and up to 5 naturally, before you need certifications of breeding fitness by a vet for an exemption to breed additional litters.
I breed mine 3-4 times, depending on how good of a mother they are, how well they bounce back etc.
 
I’m sorry OP for going off topic but I’m astounded you can have 3 C sections! I thought if a bitch had one it was advisable not to breed from her again.
Red had two and when she was spayed they said the scar tissue was terrible and she lost loads of blood.
 
MY mother bred dogs, first GSDs just after WW2, then poodles and finally Golden Retrievers. She never had more than 2 litters from the bitch and they were over a year apart. Everything was tested and pups were KC reg. I thought that was standard and it was only puppy farmers who bred multiple litters from a bitch! I am horrified!

The Kc are , not surprisingly, quite woolly with recommended numbers of litters . They will allow more if “genuine” reasons . Some are genuine such as a large breed female having only a couple of pups in a litter , some can be less so . Regarding sections , I know of a pug breeder/puppy farmer who had allowed litters by c section then carried on having cross litters from same females . Nothing the vets could do 🙁

I agree. Wouldn’t breed more than 2 litters from a bitch. Mine are busy in their proper careers though, not just being broodmares so wouldn’t have time anyway.

Years ago I had a bitch who had a c-section, my vet then did say they would have to notify KC which was fine by me as I wouldn't have bred from her again. She actually removed the choice as she bled out so had to be spayed there and then. I would maybe consider mating again if section was needed due to a huge pup but in the case of uterine inertia, which this was, there would be too much risk of it happening again in my view.
