About 3 I think - but they don't have to be double clears.
There is criteria in the rule book - has to be less than a certain penalty score in dressage / SJ and I think youmight be allowed 1 stop XC (may be getting confused though).
Yes HC would count as the rules just say Novice or higher.
Also unlike the FEI rules (which allow only the current or preceeding 2 calendar years^) there is nothing about a time limit just that you need the 4 clear rounds XC with 16 or less SJ pens.
^ PS for CCI* one of the qualifying results has to be within 3 months of the event
Its a CIC I want to do. So I dont even need a 2 day to qualify but have always wanted to do one so am going to try and do it! But if I dont have 4 clears by then (July) then I wont do it

That seems like a lot of clears to get before you can compete in something the same height just over 2 days!

It's not the same height. 2 day Novices are basically the same as a novice except some of the fences are intermediate/1* height / technicality I believe. I was planning to do a 2 day earlier this year but instead did the 1 day novice. I walked the courses, basically the 2 day followed most of ours but had the odd bigger / scarier / more technical fence. I thought a 2 day novice is basically an intermediate?!
MagicMelon - a Novice 2 day is not the same as an intermediate ! The max heights/widths XC are the same as Novice. It is likely that there will be a few more at the maximum height & may look scary but this would be due to the fact that same Novice fences are not at the max.
Oh. They novice 2 days Ive seen had the odd fence which looked massive...?! I guess the 1 days might not be up to height, they seem it though! I always thought a novice 2 day was like the step between a 1 day N and an Intermediate.
