I don't know about you, but I spent most of my afternoon prodding all the boys bits! I found some beans, got some VERY funny looks, and have discovered the best cure for biting my nails...
I would put a considerable amount of money on there being a rather large number of gelding owners who went out today in search of the elusive bean!

I feel a little bit sickened by myself now...

Ok guys, now i keep hearing about these beans!
I have a gelding, my first one in 15 years, his willy has the yellow cornflakey stuff on it when it's hung out!
What is the bean? and how do i get it out?
help? Sorry

Nope, never have never will unless I haev a reason too, in the cleaning sense but I did look at one of my lads bits that had a swelling to it.

becase of the whole bean debate on here i took it to the yard to see what the general feeling was  i spoke to most of the liveries who had geldings (which weirdly is most) and none of them had ever cleaned there horses willies and certainly never heard of the bean.

one livery i spoke to said she had asked her friend a vet about it and he told her it was best to leave well alone as the amount of injuries he has had to tend to from people searching etc.

so now i am not sure what to do. As paddy only kicked me in the face about 2 weeks ago and knocked me out i don't really fancy going pack to casualty anytime soon. so i am thinking unless he is throwing it in my face i might wait.

I had a fiddle around with all of our boys, and those who seemed happy about it got the bean treatment, but three told me exactly where I could shove it, so I left them well alone.
In South Africa the vets come out specifically to remove beans, we used to all club together and share the call out fee and have lots of boys with sweet smelling bits!
I think injuries occur when you start pulling and poking too hard, like anything! So I'd just be extra super gentle and see... I'm sure it can't be comfortable to have some like that wedged up there!

Yeah, no one at my livery has ever done it, bar one which was only because the gelding got an infection. I know there is an argument that you should, because in the wild there are no geldings, and all the stallions keep clean by mating, but surely no every single stallion mates, only the lead stallions?

I'm not sure whether to do it or not, as I'm sure Wings wouldn't mind, but seeing as people say leave well alone, but some say do it, I don't know who to go with :(

I removed a bean from my gelding's bits last week. I'd noticed every time he had a wee, that it wasn't coming out in a straight line like it used to, but spraying in all directions. Not only that, but it was almost as though not all the wee was coming out properly because as he was walking off after weeing, there was more wee coming out in little gushes.
He wouldn't let me look at it while he was out in the field, he just kept running away, so the next time I had him tied up on the yard and his whatsit was hanging out on it's own accord, I had a little look. I could feel it just inside the tip, so I gave it a squeeze and out it popped!
I was reading up about it afterwards and apparently they are very common. This was the advice given about them........

What is a "bean"? A firm lump of smegma that has collected and hardened inside the horse's penis. This lump or "bean" must be removed as often as possible. It can cause serious pain to your horse. There have been thousands cases in the last year where the bean is overlooked by the owner and becomes so large that the horse can no longer urinate...which may also cause other problems due to blockage.

Hope this helps! :)
