how many of you have a double and travel with no partition?

Im looking at trailers at the moment and would like a single but do you think i can find a second hand one!! I dont really want to spend over 3k on a brand new single ifor. the reason i want a single as i will, 99% of the time only be towing one and i would like the space of a single so i can get the neddy ready in the trailer, i hate tying up on the side of the trailer. I also have a very green traveller, hes only 5 and has been in a lorry a handfull of times, and not the best experience when he came over from ireland. So instead of a single, my next option is a double (505) and take the partition out, but would that give him to much room? he is only 15hh.

My YO uses a 510 with no partition no probs.

We put the foals in loose without a partition.

And the mares go in without a partition. You just change the bar at the front.

I've never heard any comments about the partition not being there.

I'm not a fan of single trailers. I'd go for a double.

Ditto others: a double Ifor is useful for travelling without the partition, partic for mares n foals/nervous travellers...gives you a more flexible set-up and room to maneouvre round Neddy when you need it...

I have an Ifor 505 and use it without the partition because Manni cannot balance if he is just on the right hand side, but when he has the whole space he stands diagonally and doesn't move at all.

Also it's great having the space to get in and tack up or un tack or whatever in bad weather.

My first horse had to travel in my HB505 without the partition as she couldn't balance with it. Just make sure you get full length breast and breech bars which you can get from Ifor Williams. I personally hate the single trailers as the look so unstable.

i dont have a problem with the singles as they actually pull very nicely. but they are ovbiously popular as i cannot find any second hand ones! and to fund it im going to be having a word with mr banker so i dont want to be borrowing to much!

I always travel my mare without a partition in a double and she's much happier for it.
I did a study (long time ago!) on travelling positions for horses and a lot of the research showed that horses were more relaxed/ lower heart rates when they had more space and could spread their legs and have some choice over body position.

My old Arab alway travelled without a partition.

Personally don't like the single trailers they look far to flimsy for my liking.. Look like they will blow over when a lorry passes..

I used to have a single Ifor years ago,when i was looking i couldn't find one for ages but then when i bought one loads came on the market! Always the way! I liked mine,used it for my 14.2 welsh d back then but then decided to get a lorry,horse broke so sold the lorry and ended up buying a Bateson Deauville which i totally adore and would never go back to an Ifor now,my 15hh mare had a fall in a trailer so it took a while to get her to travel again,she travels now but only without partition in,she just can't seem to balance otherwise,she much prefers being on her own as well,works well,i have now put the partition in as she is no longer with me but when i take my fairly wild dartmoor out for the first few times i'll leave the partition out as he also thinks trailers = being taken from his mum,poor boy. Good luck i think if you keep searching ebay everyday and ad trader/pre loved and freeads you should find a single one,they seem to have them often on there.

iv towed my friends new bateson with the new smooth ride suspension and it was lovely to tow and gave the horses a really nice ride, but i just felt that i wanted something abit heavier, it was almost abit to light, and the one time i took it up the motorway i wet myself everytime a lorry went past :-0 but maybe its just something i would have to get used to. i pulled an ifor when i did my test and it was nice if abit noisey ;-)

The big advantage of not having a partition is that you can travel with the horse tacked up ready. If I ever go hunting again regularly I will get a full width breast bar for this very purpose.
On the other hand, if you go to shows/nights away, you need the partition so you can put all the clobber in the other half.

I have a Ifor 510, and I travel my 15.1 Cob without a partition, he has full width breast bars and breech bars, which I bought for a bargin price off ebay. I find that he travels and loads well, plus like you say you can get them ready in the trailer. Like the other post I also cross tie him.

Only thing you must remember if travelling without a partition is to always cross tie so it can't turn or damage itself; a horse I knew fractured his neck by turning to look behind him, driver had to brake suddenly and he must have gone neck/shoulder first into the side.
I always travel mine without a partition.

This, for a 14.1 NF pony. He absolutely loves it. It only came about when trailer was also being used for mare & foal transport, and we just thought we'd see how he got on on his own. He is so much more cooperative, and it is a godsend when it's raining, being able to tack up inside etc etc.

Same here. Had some loading issues a while back with partition in (after a long journey) so bought breast and breach bars, have had no problems since.
Had to travel him home in a double with a partition at the weekend, had a breakdown, and he really didn't want to get into the box, and wasn't too happy about the lack of space, but luckily was a short journey.

One of mine won't go near the trailer if the partition is in. I presume he has problems balancing with it We got him in one & then had major loading trauma for the next 2 months. Bloomin pain as it means we can only take one horse anywhere.

My tb falls over with a partition as he puts his feet together and tries to lean on the partition rather than balancing himself We now travel all the time without a partition and with two in the trailer they still travel nicely without the partition

Cross tied, no partition, mare travels very well and is hardly ever sweaty. She positions herself herringbone.

Same here, cross tied with no partition in an old Rice Europa.

My HW shire x mare has always hated travelling but when we recently had to move yards she travelled beautifully like this, better than ever.

yep most of mine travel cross tied with no partition, but we originally took the partition out for my 14hh mare who couldnt travel without bracing herself so she travels loose, spins round and sticks her head out the back! now she loves travelling...

I have a large space treka and you can make the partition any size you want
its good for that I like to make it 3/4 and then I dont have too much space but have enough for travelling and then can fasten back when I need to get her ready, also they are good because the have a side load, which is better for horses who are used to travelling by wagon - hope this helps

I am glad to hear that so many people are successfully travelling without a partition.

Trev won't go anywhere near the trailer with the partition in place, even at the 3/4 setting, but will load quite happily without it. As soon as the farrier has finished making me a full width breast bar (old Rice) we will hopefully be on our way.

We have an old rice trailer that we travel my 15.3 mare in without the partition.

We have a full length breast bar (no breach bar) & cross tie, she then stands on a diagonal.

Oh & it's great when it's raining outside & I can tack up the horse without getting her out the trailer

We do have a partition but as she was happy to travel without, whilst we were having it re-done we never bothered to put it back in!

I travel mine in my Bateson double with the back section of the partition removed. He travels better this way. I hate single trailers - with doubles at least you have extra room to store equipment etc.

This may be a stupid question (have only ever travelled a horse with partition) but without the partition and cross-tying, how do you gage what length do you tie the leadropes?

Without seeing it done, I envision horse stood in middle of trailer not being able to move much and therefore unable to eat hay?
