How many of you have put yourself in debt to have a horse?

No way would I go into debt for a horse! Having said that, if the wheels came off my employment or something and times were hard...my horse would still have food and be looked after.
Once me and my OH lost our jobs for 6 months together and we really struggled financially...I did not have a horse then but we had cats and a small herd of ducks...we made sure they had food and corn and then lived off jacket spuds and beans for us! Our animals are very important to us but going into debt or getting a loan to pay for them is not something I would do.

Without wishing to sound corny, I am hugely indebted to my OH for heavily subsidising my 'string' of 5 equines.

When we were poor, I kept my pony on a tight budget. Now we are in less financial straits, kids and I have a lovely (tho not expensive) collection and I have got me a job to make some sort of contribution to the cost. Am not one for running up ANY sort of debts and save up like I always did for stuff. Old habits and all that......

Ask him about his garage full of old cars waiting for restoration

LOL!!I got a bank loan for my boy, made sure i took enough out to buy all the gear(named of course, lol)!!Found few yrs down the track short of cash to feed im so had to sell some of the very nice, brand new gear cheaper to buy feed, then i ran up credit card on things i didnt really need for him but hey,we can all be dumb sometimes eh??LMAO!!I have finally grown up and realised my boy aint interested if he got named gear on,as long as it fits and is comfortable he couldnt give a toss either way!Money now being saved for well deserved holidays for us all, lol!!

used always have more money left at the end of each month before horse now its the other way. also bought a junk of a car in the hope of buying a trailer to tow him to shows and things instead of having my top of the range vw. sad.

No - never been in debt for horses. I saved up enough money to buy my current horse outright. I save a large chunck of my wages every month. The savings are supposed to be a deposit for a house, but if an unexpected, large bill came up I would dip into it to, but try to avoid it. If I wanted to get another horse at any time, I might use some of my savings, depending on the circumstances.

I will only buy non-essentials for my horse (and me) if I have some money left over at the end of the month.

Not actually in debt but permanently skint! I often say I should buy a shredder and just shred £10 notes and feed them directly to my horse (with the possible addition of a supplement!) to save going to the feed merchant! I am very strict with myself and don't go to the saddlers unless I need something urgently, we've got a couple of really big saddlery shops near here and I always used to come home with something for him or me in the latest colour. Eventually decided that as it all ends up pooh/mud coloured I was being had! However, I wouldn't swap the healthy skint lifestyle for anything. Also I'm time poor as well, juggling full time job and home along with immaculately kept horse!

Yes, took out a bank loan to buy my mare 3 1/2 years ago. Then took out another to buy a second horse when she went lame and it looked like she was retired. She then came sound, so I sold the other horse and recycled that money into a deposit for my horsebox - the balance of which is funded by .... you've guessed it, another loan! EEEk I hear you say. I figure so long as I can afford to service my debts, I shouldn't put off the things that are important to me. I'm 48, my OH is 51, we know several people who have popped their clogs around our ages - Life is for living. I intend to die in debt!

Thats not to say that I don't worry a bit sometimes, but then I go and ride and its all good!

I saved for a trailer but spent the money on a youngster, thought he'd live forever, but didn't so got a loan to by another youngster, he's just been injured and isn't insured so the very nice bank manager has upgraded my loan to pay the vets bills off.
I am well within my limits so don't really consider myself in debt (as I know I can pay the loan back) but every spare penny I do get goes in to the boys.

Mother funded but I do have to pay back half.

I am however in more debt that I like to think about....I am currently in going through the opposite to consolidation and paying it all off over the next 2 years after that the world is my oyster.
