Strange question it may seem but with spring approaching I wondered if anyone monitered their mares especially those not used as broodmares.
I would just ask you to as medical problems can go unnoticed as I found. Having a Welsh Sec D over a period of time her temperament was changing as she became more stallion-like. Had the vet to check her who then asked when she had her last season - I honestly couldn't remember.
Apparently cystic ovaries are common and result in lack of seasons but sadly ovarian tumours result in testosterone production. After a successful removal of one melon sized tumour by one fantastic vet I now have a very female Sec D.
Tumours are rare but cysts are common so PLEASE keep an eye out this spring.

thanks for posting, very interesting.
My mare, when in season can be a total tart! she has done it for years, she often walks backwards into the fence (geldings next door) or last summer flashing her bum at the very old gelding she was turned out with! She doesn't do anything else. She is very good to ride, even when in season. She may smell a bit too. Over the winter she has continued to come into season, but when spring is here, she will have a very 'smelly one' and then be her normal self.
Saying that, she too is a Sec D (X TB) and can often act very stallion-like when the moment chooses .... only in the field mind, and wouldn't dream of being like that under human handling.
But, your post is something to think about.

Interesting post.

I honestly couldn't say when my mare had her last season either. But then, in the past some of the mares I have had didn't exhibit any obvious signs of being in season so wouldn't know when their cycle was anyway. And the one who did exhibit 'in season' signs was like it on a permenant basis :D

The mare I have at the moment does 'wink' occassionally and this is the only sign I can think of that would indicate she was in season.

Will monitor her closely and see what happens

Don't record them but my mares certainly let me and all the local boys know they are in season :o
Seem regular enough during the spring/summer, honeys a ex broodmade so is a bit of a tart!! :p

I never noticed Sambas seasons when I first got her, I had to get her scanned to make sure she was empty, which she was.

Now she is on livery she has had seasons all through the winter (is out with a very tarty mare maybe thats why I notice it more)

But I couldnt tell you the dates.

Yes mares certainly let you know when they are in season but when their not it tends to go unnoticed. With one of our Section A's all the boys in the village know.

Afraid I'm rather like this myself. Good point that we should all be a little more observant. My mare went out of season yesterday so I shall make a note on the calendar!

I do .... and like you cambrica have reason to ;) Taz had issues a few years ago including changed behaviour etc and when scanned had a massive swelling on ovary. Long story short it was thought to be a tumour but just as thinking op to remove it , it started to shrink. Hoever few months later recurred and diagnosis of repetitive anovulatory follicles made.. tried to release egss and they dont, they just keep growing. In retrospect she had prob had them before but we had not linked the changes in behaviour (hormones and pain) to her trying to season. :(

Regumate did not work to stop her seasons so now she has a marble in her uterus to try mimic being preggers and stop seaons.

That is not entirely successful ..... she has just been in season ..... but they are def fewer so less chances therfore of being a problem one. :)

Doris insists on sticking her bum in people's faces and winking as if to say "Look! I NEED a stallion!"

Haven't noticed Saffy in season yet. She's 3 so I'm assuming she's "started".

Ethel is a tart even when not in season and is always quite stallion like, making sure the boys know who is boss.....not that they were ever in any doubt!

she isn't a problem when in season, just goes very gooey eyed over whichever gelding takes her fancy at the time, squirts and wees a lot and gets bit messy....yuk!. It is unusual for her to come into season over winter but a lot of mares seem to be a bit out of sync this year!

Of course I know when my mares are in season; their behaviour changes a little.
Do I 'monitor' it or log it? No, of course not. The only time I pay attention to the timing is if I want to get it covered.
S :D
