I would have to say probably, I am 5'0 and B is 14.3hh. I have had shots on friends horses and can ride ok on a lightly built 16hh, but on my yo 16.3hh idx i feel like a pea on a mountain. I think it's all down to the build of the horse and the length of your leg.

i am 5' 1/2 ish and have ridden 16hh+++ horses in the past BUT had to climb onto a fence or two crates just to get on them.
if i had to get off on a ride i would never have gotten back on them!!! it did scare me a bit ( don't like heights!) always further to fall!!!! i looked a bit like a pea on a pod.
when i bought my mare i was looking for a pony/ small horse. she is 14.2 hh and perfect size for me as i can hop on and off as required.
it's personal choice really, some people like big horses, others small. practicality worked for me! also, can duck under trees on smaller horses instead of being wacked in face!

I am 5'6 and ride a 16.3-17 hand beastie. I look like a pea on a mountain, but wouldnt change him for the world.

He is half highland and he feels like a big pony!

I am 5ft7 and own a 17.1hh, but only because I share him with my 6ft3 dad, ideally I think having something a hand smaller would be a lot easier at times. Allthough I can mount him from the ground

I'm 5'3" and my old horse was 17.3 Bavarian WB. I did look like a tiny gnome when I was on him but we competed for a few eyars and done quite well. I wouldn't want another one that size but I think it's a personal choice, size doesn't matter so long as you can get a tune out the horse.

I'm 5'4'' and my horse is 16.2hh, I have to say any bigger and it just feels ridiculous - I could maybe ride a 17hh TB but nothing heavier built.

whats considered short lol?? i'm 5'6'' and have a 17hh and a 15hh and feel fine on both, but i felt like i'd stolen the kids pony when i rode a friends 14.2hh, there just wasn't enough horse in front of me lol

I am 5 ft 1 1/2 & the horse in my avatar was 17 hh. We got a few BD points & we bsja'd to 1 m 15. He was an ISH & quite strapping. When I went to see him I fell head over heels for him, so I just bought a *massive* mounting block.

My current horse is 16.1 with a similar build, & he is prob easier to ride than Cat, but he is an easier horse in general.

I'm 5ft4 and once rode a friends Cleveland that was 17hh. He was in fact, looking back, a very over grown pony. That didn't change the fact that even with the strrup leather on the bottom hole, I had to struggle to get my foot in the stirrup, and even when my leg was straight I still had 4 more inches to get up into the saddle...if anyone knows a Cleveland from Windsor called Cambridge...I'll give him a retirement home ...lots of gentle happy hacking... personally I didn't care what I looked like, it was more whether I could get a good tune from him...which I did amazingly...so long legs are not important cos his dad was 6ft 5 and could barely get a trot from him...lol.

I'm 5'2" and have had a 17.1hh TB on loan - I just never fell off when riding

My last horse was a 'big' 16.2hh SF, he was such a gentleman that I never ever felt over-horsed

I can only remember falling off him once, when we were XC schooling, and I just used a nearby fence to get back on again

I'm 5'4" and new horsie is 16.2 / 3. She doesn't feel as big now I'm used to her but when she messes about when I'm on the ground she seems massive. Other pony is 14.2 so its a big step up. I rode my friends 17.2 clydesdale for a while but i felt like the kid on mom's horse.

i'm riding an 18.1 ish hugh beast at the mo. i love it, must admit he did feel big at 1st but i forgot about that after a week or so. i'm 5'4

Why does eveyone on yards have an opinion on what we should or should not do, it drives me mad. I'm 4'11 and 3/4 and Ralph is 16.2 and built like a brick........house! I have ridden ponies and horses all my life and competed at a decent level and not had a problem........so if you are comfortable with your horse stick with it and tell your yo to mind her own bloody business......

oooooh i feel better now

I am 5'5 and ride 16h plus horses regularly, the bigges being 18h, as long as you have the aura that someone is on their back and they are the boss theres not a problem!

I'm the same height/size as you Kirst and my horse is 16.3hh. Sometimes it is a lot of horse to hold together but I don't feel small on him and have the same inseam as someone 2/3 inches taller than me so I don't struggle to get my leg round him.

me too, i am a shade over 5 fot, and the Moose is 16.3hh (Cazza says she is 17hh, but I'm trying not to believe that). Yes she's huge, yes the ground is a long way away, yes i look like a pea on a drum...but there is nothing like a really big horse. As long as you have a big enough mounting block, everything is good.

QR: I am a short arse too!! I am 5'3", my horse is 16hh which is perfect and I can mount from the ground easily.

But, I ride a lot of horses including some big ones and it all depends on their temperament in my opinion. Some large horses are "man's horses" I have found and I am just too small and light to anything if they decide to really nap. We had an enormous polo "pony" that wouldn't do a damn thing for me or most women that rode him

I'm 5 ft 3 and Axey is 16.2, I bought him as a yearling and he was advertised as making 15.2/15.3 he is now 6 and has grown rather a lot lol!

The ironic thing about it is that the guy that bred him only sold him because he didn't think he would be big enough for him, and when I saw him recently he was gutted that Axey has grown to 16.2

I find him fine to ride and handle and don't think of him as a big horse at all. I always use a mounting block to get on anyway and would on any horse, and if I ever get off him he's very good at standing next to things while I climb back on.
My last horse Rocky was 17 hands but massive with it and he was too big for me, and that's why I sold him!

I have a 15.2 youngster a 16.3hh WB and a 18hh WB and I am 5ft 4" The 18hh is the easiest to sit by the way! (just as well, don't fancy coming off him without an air bag!). xx

I'm 5'7'' but extremely 'petite' . I ride a 16h and a 17h. Both big broad horses. I get along with mine just fine. Wouldn't have got them other wise. It depends on the horse, mine do get really strong sometimes but I have always been able to keep them under control so far (touch wood!).
I think it depends on your riding ability and what the horse is like..

I'm 5'6/7 and size 8, but I have fairly long legs so I don't tend to look out of place on most horses. I used to ride an 18.2hh at college for our jumping lessons and he was lovely, but luckily he was polite as if he had decided to be a prat I would have had no chance. At work I ride a few big horses, a 16.3hh and something I think is about 17hh but feels ginormous! The 17hh definitely feels too big for me, and the 16.3hh is verging on too big but I can just about ride the back end of him so it can't be that bad. My new job involves a lot of riding - luckily they are mostly about 15.2hh and apparently I look like I "fit" on that sort of size! If I was looking to buy again I'd be looking between 15.2hh and 16.2hh - I don't like riding anything shorter than 15.2hh!
