My mum owns and has bred many horses yet she wont even hold one of mine! She isnt very hands on to say the least -and doesnt ride but loves nothing better than to watch my dressage comps and offer her cc! Funny she doesnt have alot to say when it comes to xc!

I rely on my mum big time!
Today for example she got up at 6.30 went and plaited for me
She then came home to pick me up, and drove me to Eland in the car, my step-dad drove the lorry with the mare on
She then tacked up for me and got me on board "so i didnt get my white jods dirty"
Once i had done the test i did help out
wink.gif

i wouldnt be able to compete without her!
When i used to event she would always be waiting on the finish line of the xc for me to take the horse back to the lorry.

Lol - my mother can barely tell one end of a horse from the other! But she is an invaluable substitute for NHS Direct in cases of suspected fracture. The father is much more useful, despite refusing to answer the phone for veterinary emergencies after 9pm..

You're all very lucky. Please, don't take it for granted.

I know and I don't. My Mum grooms for me at every competition - I do the driving though and tacking up! Will take a long lunch from work to come to the yard and adjust grids for me, puts up with me when things go wrong, and is generally an all round star!

My mother touches my horses about once every 6 months...My daddy however is amazing.

He helps me all the time, he gets driven to distraction by my old girl, but still carries on. He does all the towing, the grooming, is chief photographer etc etc.

I luff my daddy!!

Ah i wish!!! My parents are totally unhorsey, despite ending up with two very horsey daughters!!!!

I do keep my elderly pony in a field at their house though and my mum puts her feed in for her every morning. She rarely comes to watch me compete though and growing up she would watch from a distance, i had to do everythign myself. Was always hugely jealous of people who had their mums to help them at competitions, still am tbh.

Same here Autumnrose. They show a polite interest, but don't really get involved so much. They havent seen Lucky under saddle yet, and still don't really "get" eventing (other than Burghley!) cant moan though, they help me in other ways which means I can keep a horse, even though they don;t help WITH the horse!

My Mam's a very old fashioned Irish catholic housewife, and i'm the youngest of 10 and live next door. So, never had to cook in my life, she does a lot of organising for the yard and show entries, she thinks i'm Jesus etc etc. Tough as old boots though - sent me off hunting as a 5 year old bareback to teach me to stay on, and despite being 30 i still get a smack for swearing.

Couldn't be without her - she's my best friend.

no financial help though, i am 23 and would be pretty embarrassed if i was still taking handouts from my mum.

No help here! Mine lives 300 miles away, both parents are extremely unhorsey and have been to see me compete twice I think since I was a kid. Once at Blair (well it was on the doorstep) and once at Hexham. When they come to stay Dad will come along to the yard and pat the horses on the nose but that's about it!

They did buy me a new pair of boots last year though

Very grateful for dads help with maintenance, and help with fences at shows - even though he can never remember what the fences are called (ie oxer, upright) so can take a while and is sometimes a liabilty in BSJA by almost getting run over lots of the time - doesn't bother other BSJA'ers one bit that
smirk.gif

My mum is helpful, and is good at filming - esp the grass! - but always seems to make herself scarce when fences need putting up or horses need holding. This is mainly cos she's trying to chat with all the pony club mums. She is the SJ team manager, its been years since me and my sister were young enough for PC. We're 28 and 31!

Wow - you guys are seriously lucky! I have a wonderful mother, but she never had anything to do with the horses. Growing up, I was very much on my own - did everything myself, although I would have loved my parents to have been involved. You all make sure you buy your Mum's a really special Christmas present!!

My mum is amazing!! She mucks out all 3 of them for me every day, i turn out before work. Then I get them in and ride in the evening after work. I work full time and couldnt have more then one if mum didnt muck them out.

She also drives the lorry everywhere for me, so comes to all shows, she is my groom too, she plaits them all for shows (im terrible at plaiting!) And puts studs in for me at an event! Also goes and gets my number for me!!

I wish I could (those who know me, know what I mean). Appreciate your Mum’s people, you never know what might be around the corner.

I feel the same...six years at the end of this month.

But my Dad is fab, he lends me he Discovery to tow my trailer with, was with me when I had to make the decision to have Felix pts, and is generally there when I need him (although most of the time he doesn't know what he's doing - which can be a good thing, as he shows no fear when leading my bouncing 4yo, so Uno soon gets bored and behaves)!

My mum is a complete star - she is my biggest supporter, groom, horse holder, entry fee payer, helper, driver and I just could not be without her.

She battling cancer at the minute and has not been very well and is going back into hospital this week -she has told her doctor he has to keep her going for another 4 years as she want to see Zippy (the foal) under saddle....

Well I am some freaky throwback to the days of every family having a farmer of balcksmith in it, none of my family are horsey at all! However, my Mum and Dad have come along to support "Team Hopalong" this year when we've finally hit the road to get out and about.

They came down to watch us complete our first ever HT (the giddy heights of 75cm!
wink.gif
) and also our first BE, even dragging Granny and sister along!
smile.gif
The also knew how much my placing at Scone meant to me and sent a "well done" card!
blush.gif
grin.gif

They also part-funded my trailer which allows me to get out and do all the fun stuff and are very good about giving cash as Christmas/birthday presents so I can buy membership/fund new saddles/tack etc! They also remember to bring carrots and apples when visiting Hopalong.
smile.gif

They are also very good at patiently listening to me rambling on about what we get up to at various lessons/ shows and even manage to sound interested!
smile.gif

However, they would be absolutely stumped if faced with leading/tacking up/grooming/mucking out etc (closest they get is a quick pat and "good pony"!), but that's ok as I'm a control freak about doing stuff my way and have Mr FigJam in training instead!
wink.gif

I like being independant and love my parents, but I'm also jealous of those folk who come from horsey backgrounds and have a wealth of knowledge and experience to benefit from.

new here, but was just thinking about this today, as i have a lesson organised for wed afternoon and mum is going to bring my horse in and get him ready whilst im at work, and have him on the lorry ready to go for when i get home bless her.

im 26 next month and still rely on my parents a huge deal. our 2 horses and shetland all live at home (i dont) but i do all 3 each morning with a bit of help from my dad, as mum has arthritis in her spine and finds it hard to bend/lift/push in the early mornings so cant muck out/change rugs etc.
i do all the clipping and trimming etc, but she ferrys me to shows and lessons, and dad pays for all the bedding, diesel, and big vets bills.

couldnt be without them (and i do try and tell them that often!!!)

nope, never helped with anything - and she was the original horsey one! had horses when she was young but never took an interest all the years I've ridden, my dad on the other hand has gone from a complete novice to a 110% superhero groom - he knows how to do pretty much most things bar riding it!! and all of my horses have absolutely loved him! awww

Hey, everyone...I am one of the mums...my daughter and I do all the chores together...muck out, clip, groom, clean tack, poo pick...I drive her to events...lessons etc etc...I pay for her entries, and she has a job to help buy new equipment.
But before I pat myself on the back too much... the reason I do it all, is largely because I LOVE IT!!!!
We have the very best of times together.....
So......,yes , be grateful to your mums....but, trust me...they are getting heaps out of it too.
It's a two way thing...and I wouldn't change it for anything.

I would be so stuck without my parents!! I've got 4 to do at home and work full time. I'm generally up at 6 to ride before work. Mum then does the mucking out and general horse duties!! She's also my groom at shows, reading tests and working out the running order etc. She's in her 60's and I really dont know what i would do without her!!

Even my totally unhorsey dad gets roped in as chief menage leveller and muck trailer emptier!! Bless him!

I know i am bloody lucky and very spoilt!

Mum is amazing. She keeps my horse fit, rides whatever horse my sister has (she's now starting riding her 17hher- Mum is a very slight 5'1!) and takes us everywhere. Without her, we wouldn't have horses. In return, we scare her witless, falling off, jumping too big and having 'wobbles'. She manages to chivvy us to the start, get us going, run round an entire XC course- often 4 times a competition. We've told her 1.10m is only 3' (Alice wanted to do the Novice course on her 14hh cob, so some fence-shrinkage was in order), and then a year later was told the ame line again so A could do the biggest SJ class. She runs the biggest senior PC ODE of our branch (with over 30 competitors per class), organises the RC (she's secretary), dispenses kind words and encouragement to absolutely everyone and is a fountain of common sense. She's only been really horsey since we started riding, yet if you want to know something, she knos it!

I ride 1) because i love it, all thanks to my mum.
and 2) in her memory and to make her proud.
I lost her 2 1/2 years ago when i was only 12.
But my dad is amazing even if he does put the saddle on back to front

I would be lost without mine (I am lucky to come from a horsey family) - I moved back home a couple of years ago and am now lucky enough to be able to keep my 2 horses and shetland at home.

During the week my mum does most of the mucking out whilst I am at work and fills haynets etc. And is always on hand if I need vet/farrier out as I work about 25 miles away so can't just pop home.

Also my step dad is fantastic and without their support I almost certainly couldn't compete (he drives the lorry as it is too big for me to drive)

My mother is not terribly helpful despite being horsey and having her own. She does the worming programme though and can just about manage to turn my horse out 100 yards after it has been shod. She is also very good at sticking her nose in and being critical.

I have a 15yo who keeps her horse on the farm and she is amazing - turning out and catching. In return she gets lifts to shows. My father is pretty good at making sure I have hay and straw and my OH is wonderful funding real life and driving me about.
