loan your mare out as a foster mare?

Within reason I dont think i would mind, but my mum is very much dead against it due to a huge problem when we loaned out Sasha (yes I know she was out on a riding loan but they didnt look after her and crippled her within 5 weeks!)

So apart from doing background checks, would you consider it or not?

Ideas/info please. Whats your initial answer, then think about it and is your answer the same?

Yes I would always loan a mare out as a foster mare if I had one who had milk and could do the job.....however only under the stipulation that the foal came here. I wouldn't send any of my horses off the farm.

Yes, without a doubt if all of the background checks came up positive (or the foal could come stay with me instead of her staying there) and I had no concrete plans for the mare myself.

Not only does it give the foal a fighting chance, it gives the mare something to do too. After all, there is nothing to stop you still having your mare covered, the foal will be weaned long before that.
I would insist that the foal was well insured though as a basic.

ive never thought about it before. I would love to help someone out if they were in trouble or anything like that.
How many places would actually let you take the foal to yours though? woudl they prefer to have the foal at theirs and take the mare to them?

can understand if the mare is doing nothing or has nothing planned. It would give her something to occupy her time with.

I certainly cant afford Ebi to be re-covered. Ive already got 5 horses, and I wouldnt be able to sell it.

People who need a mare with milk and who want their foal to live. I think if the choice were; no mare versus sending the foal to a suitable mare; I'm fairly sure what the decision would be.

Well hand feeding does actually work fairly well....the downside to it is you are pretty much tied to the foal for the first few months.

I've never hand-raised a foal, would have no inclination to be honest, but I have known some people who have and it becomes the ALL in their life - they can't go anywhere or do anything so it becomes a major headache.

i think i would - assuming that the foster family and their yard was acceptable for my mare. if it happened would like her to stay close so could keep an eye on her. to be honest, even if i had plans for my mare, i think i would still let them go as its just a few months - whats delaying your plans for a while when you get the chance to save a foal? i would like to think that if i ever needed a foster mare - someone would be able to help me, hence i would offer the same.
