feed your horses bread.
Just asking as the owner of my place came up with a load of bread for the horses - the healthy wholemeal stuff. Is it safe? what are the downsides? Dont want to seem ungrateful to her but want to check if its safe first as Ive never fed it before.

I used to, though brown bread seems to give them a sloppy stomach! Never had a problem with white bread.

I sometimes break a slice up into shortfeeds. Not every day though!

I give a slice occasionally as a treat

I think it's okay as a treat, but i think people encounter problems when it's a regular part of the horse's diet.

I give them the crusts whenever I've finished a loaf, and never had any problems. I use it to make jam butties whenever I've got to give bute or sedative to disguise the taste as well.

yeah i feed bread when ive got some going spare! the horses love it and never had any problems.

I don't feed my lad bread, but a friend of mine gives it to her two horses occasionally as a treat, and they love it!

I like to toast it first or feed it stale, I gave a fresh slice to a horse once, it stuck to the roof of his mouth and he went into a blind panic....

No no no! Never!! Known more than one nasty colic as a result of it - not to mentioned the dangers they taught us at college about it....

No way, turns to a gluey mass, is wheat plus chemicals and starch, causes bloating in humans so why not horses.

if you put bread i water you'll see how much it swells up. if you feed it to your horse it will do the same in their belly, which causes COLIC!!!! i strongly advise you not to feed it to your horse.

It is not really the way it swells up but the consistancy of it while it is being digested.
