claire1976, fair enough, but I think that is why they have so many critics, because they double their prices. MR was unable to do anything for a friends mare who has a phobia over clippers. Part of the problem was MR would not listen to her owner, & came across as a bit agrrogant. Quiet funny when she nearly jumped all over them & out the ring!!!
I agree magic104, and its a shame. In most cases NH brings great results and I would be disappointed if MR's prices put ppl off searching for alternative NH trainers. I am also surprised that MR would not listen to the owner, that's a real shame.
When in the school, my horse will follow me round like a puppy, helping me put up jumps, poo picking etc, and same in the field - he likes my company. When I turn him out in the mornings, he plays up something chronic, coz his friend in the field is whinnying for him, and there is loads of grass for him to eat! i.e. he would gallop to the field than wait for me to slowly walk down there!
I think all horses if they trust you will follow you around if there is nothing more interesting e.g. food around.
I challenge anyone who has "joined up" with their horse, put them at one end of the arena, and me with a bucket of food at the other, and the horse will come to me every time!

Do bonding work with your horse as in join up ?

Hardly ever with my backed horses. Always when I am starting my young horses. I may do it with the odd horse which may have certain problems and who are here for training once or twice, to help establish the relationship.

I would never do it with someone else's horse that I was about hop on and ride. If the horse is broken correctly then it will know the moment I get on board that I know what I am doing, hence why would it be concerned?
For those who obviously have no understanding of sending away and coming together (trademark name "join-up"), if your horse is frightened by it and if it takes you longer than 2 or 3 minutes.....then you are doing something VERY wrong!
Fancy a trip to Canada? I could introduce you to more horses than you can imagine who would most certainly NOT go to you with your bucket if their handler was at the other end.
well my 2 youngsters only have to see me near the fence and come galloping over to see what i've got. my little welsh a is like a dog anyway don't even need a rope on him. (he knows where he goes at feed time lol, he is a male through and through).
and alfie and i were re establishing his ground work (before his injury) our school is quite small so i loose schooled him, as hes 18.3 you dont want him on too small a circle. i never use a lunge whip (hes whip phobic, bad past experiences ect). he moves out using voice aids, will walk ,trot and canter from voice, when i want him to change direction i stand still he comes to me i send him out the other way.
he will follow me over every thing i got to try (before injury) jumps , poles , turn on the forehand ect.
he will walk forwards towards me as i walk backwards, if i go forwards he walks backwards. if i stand still he stands behind me, if i stay there too long he nudges me in the back sometimes pushing me over.
some could call this join up, i call this trust, although it does give the kids on the yard something to aspire to as they love watching us messing around in the school.
my sister gets rather discusted though, small minds and all that.
i see it as a bit of fun.

Tia your spot on , in what i was trying to say . I did alittle " getting to know " the horse in loose schooling like i did the other night with my yo's horse who kept on bucking before i asked her to canter . I got on her again and reinforced my actions and it worked .
I guess it depends on the horse and the situation your in .
The join up and send away part needs to be carried out by folks who know what they are doing, if you haven't been taught properly it is best to leave this alone...thats what Monty says anyhow
