How many of your horses...

Solo windsucks, it's really odd... It's not like normal windsucking (ie. grabbing hold of stuff and sucking)... He arches his neck and puts his nose at his chest and just breaths in for ages... It's been better recently, we think he was a bit bored in his last home (riding for the disabled).

It doesn't cause any problems fir him, but it's soooo annoying for us!

See I call that sucking - to me it is cribbing if they grab hold of stuff

I know I am not technically correct, but it is the way I differentiate it!

I thought that too?? Why is that not correct?? If they are crib biting then surely they have to actually bite something??

all ours do something now - 2 cribbers and a weaver.

We must be bad owners.

I had a terrible weaver a few years ago - bought him knewing he weaved. We improved the situation with lots of turnout, good routine/exercise, appropriate diet etc but still he was a bit of a stress head. I put rubber matting in his stable so that when he did it he was at least not on concrete, but I still hated seeing him stressed, poor poppet.

No problems on the back of it, to my knowledge.

thats how I see too...

none of mine have ever had any vices except my cobbie can't be left when tied up but that because he has sweet itch and will hook the rope over his neck to scratch and get in a tangle (however short it is)..
I expect none of mine have vices because they live out...

I was always told crib bitters are those who bite wood off and either drop it or eat it. Wind suckers either grap hold of something and suck, but don't bite it off or suck in the air without holding something.

Ive had horses in the past with just about every vice known to man, however I will never have another one now. I can't bare to watch the weaving/box walking/sucking etc and just won't entertain it anymore.

See, I don't really care - what they do in their free time is up to them!

The only thing that does get on my nerves is horses that bang the door excessively - and thats not even a proper vice!

As we have been told by lecturers (by 2 different ones) a cribber takes something in its' mouth in order to suck air in, a windsucker has nothing in its' mouth when sucking air in.

Back to the original question, none of mine have ever had any vices apart from Missy who is a grasper doesn't affect her in any way because it seems to serve no purpose......It just irritates me!

I used to have a horse who got really stressed if he wasn't doing what all the other horses were doing. He would weave for about 1-2 minutes and be absolutely sweated up beyond belief. He was hard work to manage and he struggled to keep weight on because of it. Had a cribber though and my TB weaves a little, but only in the field (odd, I know - she's a bit weird!) no problems with either of those to speak of...

Just taken me a while to be arsed to get my sig back on!

See mine does both. She has had a very hard life over the years and is set in her ways now so there is no point me trying to stop her..

She will try and grab onto something when I put her saddle on (has always done it) and sometimes she will just stand there and suck air in but luckily she hardly ever does this now.

my horse weaves - has done since well before i bought him. doesn't cause either of us any problems. had the odd yard owner with issues with it, but he lives out now, so no problems.

I had a cribber once. Didn't seem to bother her, she seemed to just suck on the fence in passing if she was bored! Didn't effect her at all though. It did however drive me nuts! The gulping sound is bloody irritating and she ruined all our fence posts and wooden fencing!! Wouldn't have another, purely because it drove me nuts.

Don't have any horses but out of the school horses just have the one who has a 'proper' vice- he weaves when he's inside but lives in the outside pens and he doesn't do it there, just when he's brought in. Others have their little quirks, the pony I usually ride can't be clipped without sedation, a couple kick doors at feeding time and there's a livery horse that bites but don't have much dealing with him. I guess it's more of a problem if it's your own horse but the only thing that bothers me is the banging as it's annoying, have no problem with weavers and have yet to meet a cribber but can't imagine it would annoy me too much, althought the risk of colic would worry me.

we have bars on our stable dooes, and herbie runs his teeth up them (even with the door open), and the corners of the walls.
im pretty sure he box walks when hes in on box rest but then who can blame him. he grinds his teeth

dont think zeus has any, he does have a tendancy to bite.

I had a chronic wood-chewer who literally ate his stable door...some crib-ox pasted on the door frame for a few weeks solved the problem completely.

My 2nd pony used to very very occasionally weave at the field gate if she wanted to come in. I also had a loan horse who would box walk (canter) if she was in a foreign environment. She had to be sedated when she moved yards. Once she was settled she was fine though.

I've seen a few with stable vices on various yards though - I think the most irritating one is door banging. We had 2 on the yard this winter that did it and it was MADDENNING. LOL

1 horse used to be a chronic box walker - I mean he would often canter around!
Another horse was a TB and a known crib biter
Lottie - will chew if she is bored and wood is not treated

One of mine weaves at meal times, the other box walks pretty consistantly.

It no longer bothers either of them because they're out 24/7 all year round now

My last horse was a door banger, he lived next to |YO house..He spent the whole summer with a chain across the door and has his door taken off in case someone shut it! painn!
